LT1 alternator amperage?

Anyone know what the stock amperage for an LT1 F-car? 140? 160? 200? Is there a benefit to going w/ a higher amperage even if not running any extra stereo/accessories? Could extra amerage be detrimental? How much extra amerage would require upgrading the wires to a heavier gauge? Thanks. -Jeff

Re: LT1 alternator amperage?

I'm running a 1500 watt (peak) amp on the stock alternator with no problems for 2 years. When i had the same system in a 86 Blazer I upgraded to a high amp alt which was 140 amps. Kinda funny. I do have a optima yellow top though. I'm sure that helps.

Re: LT1 alternator amperage?

If you dont plan on running a stereo there's no reasion to upgrade to a higher output alternator, it wont hurt but not worth the money as it wont help. However, i'd buy a yellowtop, and maybe run a 4 awg ground from your battery to the stock place in the block. Since Gm's stock wiring is pretty weak, and since our lt1's are getting older the wiring might be brittle too, I added a massive stereo and upgraded all the wiring from the battery to the alt, pcm and all my grounds.
