LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
On my 1997 Camaro Z28, I finally pulled off the exhaust manifolds. I'm ready now for the Headers install. They are Pacesetter LT's, and I tried going in from the top but won't fit. I have a 3 1/2ton jack that lifts up to 22" but still not high enough. It looks like I need to go A lot higher to get the headers in at an angle up throught the top. Any ideas?
Re: LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
The only way the header's going in through the top is on the driver's side with the steering linkage out and valvecover off. That's how I did my friend's 94 Z28. The passanger side has to go up from the bottom more than likely undoing the motor mounts. Other wise its through the bottom on both sides with mounts undone.
Re: LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
Driver's side from top w/ steering linkage removed
Passenger side from bottom with motor jacked
Possible removal of valve covers - check to see if necessary first....
Don't even waste time with other options as I did...

All you have to do is get the car jacked up high enough. Ude a set of ramps if you have em. I used ramps with blocks of wood under the tires. They went in so easy from the bottom once the car was up high enough.
Re: LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
I used a 3 ton jack with 3 ton jack stands. I had my car maybe 19 or 20" off the ground, and it was plenty high enough. Even though I have an LS1, I don't see why you'd need anymore height as the LT1 LT's are about as long as mine.

Drivers side undid steering linkage and valve covers went throught the top
Passenger side I pulled valve cover and undid motor mount the jacked up the motor, slid in through the top no problem

Re: LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
I have done 2 sets of LTs on 4th gens and I got them in from the bottom without having to unbolt the mounts.
Getting the car high enough is the key.
I took out the starter, oil filter, unbolted the steering linkage, removed the dipstick, and pulled the spark plugs. You might want to remove the temp sender in the drivers side head but if your very careful it can stay in.
If you want to do it right take the time to relocate all the wires you think will be too close to header heat. I extended and relocated my starter wires and the knock sensor wire, I also relocated the ABS sensor wires that run to the front hubs. I made my own O2 extensions and routed everything very carefully and I have had zero problems now with over 25k on the install.
It took me over a week working about 4 hrs a nite to complete the install on my personal car (working by myself) but it was well worth it.

Re: LT Headers- In from the bottom?-Help!
Thanks guys!!! I'll Jack the rear up and put in on ramps, then I'll try jacking the front as high as I can. At first I thought it was too late cause I can't drive the car over the ramps since I took everything apart already, so I figure I can jack it up then slide the ramps. I tried putting the driver's side in from the top but the valve cover is in the way. So I'll try pullling it off. But first I'll see if if it can go in from the bottom once I have the car up.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
