LS1 top end vs. LT1

Everyone says LS1's have this crazy top end, and I believe it having driven both, but why does the LS1 pull on an LT1 on the highway? What's the difference in the engine? Just heads? I'm just curious.

It's the valvetrain. Ported LT1 heads barely out-flow stock LS1 heads. They also have a hotter cam than the stock LT1 cam.

Negative. Its a totally different engine, even different displacement (350 vs 346).

The answer is simple...it is a few things that cause this.

1) Better air induction system...straight through flow rather than around 40 bends.

2) Heads/cam...the LS1's have amazing heads and a hotter cam than the LT1.

3) Lack of weight....the aluminum block obviously weighs a lot less than the heavy cast iron block on the LT1.

There are probably a couple things I am forgetting, but I am sure someone else will fill in. I also didn't include the LS1 (Aluminum) driveshaft, which will help a little but not much at all.

if you want to pull on a ls1 on the highway, there are 2 ways, the bottle and blow your car"IE" supercharger, or turbo

Yea those LS1's flow

Hey blazzin, nice to see you here too! Maybe we will get more Fbody reffugee's lol.

Anyways yea LS1 heads FLOW 200 cc out of the box, LS6 heads are just milled for extra compression and flow 210CC, Justa tricked up LS1 head but LT1's flowlike in the 180's i beleive. Also the cam lifyts are much hotter.

But if the fbody was a 98-99 lat1's have a much better chance.

I read a few artical's and the heads can be compared to winston cup race heads about 5-9 years ago..... so heheh you get what i mean.

Lastly if you put a good set of afr heads and good camp you can pull on LS1's, they are not the end all to be all.

Stock LS1 heads flow about 245 cfm on the intake vs the LT1's almost 205, FWIW. The major advantage the LS1 heads have is that they're a 15 degree head vs the LT1's 23 degree design. Which means the LS1 gives the incoming air a near straight shot at the back of the intake valve. If you take an injector out of the intake and peer into the hole, you're looking at the intake valve. So at high rpms, the air isn't as turbulent and restricted as the LT1 makes it, so the LS1s make more power up top. And the tall rectangular ports allow for some huge flow numbers and still maintain excellent port velocity.

BSM, what you are referring to is the port volume. The LT1s are 170cc intake runners stock and I forget the LS1's volume. [EDIT]- Just went and checked---- the LS1's come from the factory with 215cc intake runners. 215cc vs 170cc, VERY BIG DIFFERENCE.

LT1s can have wicked LS1 top end pull if you set it up right. A member on this board is in the process of converting a set of SBC 18* heads for use on his LT1 (mindgame) and those puppies are BAAAAD.

So when I get my hotcam and pcmforless tuning will I pull on LS1's on the highway? I know I should beat em by at least .5 in the quarter if they're stock. BTW what's the difference between C5 vette ls1's and f body ls1's? Will I be able to beat a stock C5 in the quarter?

mindgame? hmm, i believe mr. horsepower was doing his head work, because he owed mindgame for some computer work (correct me if i'm wrong on this).
chuck (mr. horsepower) usually hangs out in the "advanced tech" section...i think he chewed me out once for posting a question there that wasnt advanced enough ...whatever that means.

so, mindgame's gonna have unholy flow numbers pretty soon, eh? interesting.

dont count on it my buddy biught a 2002 ws6 and two weeks after he bought he pulled 12.8 in the 1/4 stock. so if you find one like that, that haS has a little done to it watch out.
