LS1 in a 96?
i thought the reason they redesigned the car in 98 was the lt1 hood was too sloped and didnt fit an ls1...
i also agree that it isnt a great idea...i guess if you want to and have time sure, but why not either 1) buy a newer car with an ls1 or 2) get some bolt ons, keep up with ls1's and then call it a day

STILL A GAY IDEA
Why is it such a gay idea? Maybe his motor has like 200k on it and he wants a new one. Maybe his motor blew and he needs a new one and cant afford a stroker build or something of that sort. If your motor was in need of changing wouldnt you want to start off with something more powerful? How about if he asked if an LS6 would fit in a 93-97 car? Would it still be a gay idea?

if he can't afford a stroker he can't afford an LSx either
Unless you either a. have money burning a hole in your pocket and just want something new, or b. have a free LS1 w/wiring harness and computer just laying around, its going to be an expensive project. You would get far more power out of your LT1 than you would from an LS1 swap with the same amount of money.

Even if he put an LS6 in his car it's still a gay idea! Nothing special about those motors just cause they are faster STOCK
im not nesessarily saying its a gay idea...i guess we need to know his situation first...but it sounds like he just wants to do it for fun...in that case im sticking with the idea of doing bolt ons

I don't know his EXACT problems, but I do know that he's having major problems with his engine. Explain how it would be stupid to just put an LSx engine into a body that he already has? Why try to sell your car (no working engine = not very much value) and buy a MORE expensive car? To just do an engine swap would be less costly, easier (already have the roller), and it's unique.
And even though a lot of you guys with LT1's get all pissy when LS1'ers talk **** cause they think they're engine is raised on a pedestal compared to ours, they do have a more technically advanced engine with just as much (or maybe more) potential out of the box.
I say go for it if you can find the right price on one. I have no idea about the fitment though, but I do think there's a difference in the radiator/bumper support/air intake that makes it difficult to fab up. I could definately be wrong though!
Good luck, and derek, you got a PM!

Rather than shove a LS1 in an already equiped LT1 car - a person would be way better off to purchase a 98+ Camaro and just do a nose and headlight swap.
I wish I had.
I would love to have the LS1..........can't stand the fish face though.
I hadn't thought of that when I went to buy mine though.
