I am wanting to put in lowering springs on my 96 z28.

When I spoke to my regular shop they said I would need shorter than stock shocks to do so on the rear.

Said as the spring is shorter than the range of travel of the shock that on a hard bump the shock could extend beyond the length of the spring and the spring could come out of the housing.

Nothing I have read anywhere online confirms this, can anyone explain how the rear shocks and springs work together and how springs that are about 1.75 inches shorter than stoch would work with stock shocks?

Tell them... You'll be ok. I you want to blow the coin get the Bilstin Sports. I had them on My M5 with H&R spring...HOLY****...ROUGH RIDE

 

They are just trying to sell you a set of shocks that you probably don't need. My Eibach rear springs give me a 1.5 inch drop, and I'm still on the stock shocks (although it's about time to replace them). No problems for 30k miles.

 

You would have to get nearly airborne to get the springs to pop out of the seats. I have Suspension Techniques springs (~1.75" drop) and had the stock shocks on for a long time before changing over to Bilsteins recently. They were just fine, never had a problem with them popping out of the seats.

 

they do have a point, though most shocks you get will be about the same length as stock. though, as a word of warning, you will probably at least need front ones because that nut at the top of the shock will most likely have to be cut off if you have a lot of miles.

 

Well I did need new front shocks and mounts as they were quite rusted and basically not reusaeable but I had a set of take off Decarbons.

I plan on changing to better shocks later on as I know the Decarbons will wear out with different springs other than stock.

I got Eibachs and have had them for 5 years with the stock shocks and its fine.

 

DMS coils 1.3 drop here with Decarbon take offs. 8000 miles so far, rides great NO tire wear, front end alighnmet is still perfect.

 

He'll be fine with stock shock, that was what I was trying to say..Miss type on my part. ..
