Low Oil Pressure at Idle

Hey guys,

I've got a small problem, well I hope its small.

I got a 1994 Camaro Z28, auto transmission, 135,000 miles

Recently I noticed my oil pressure falling to 0 and the check gauges light coming on at idle, however when I'm cruising it seems fine. I did an oil change, 10W-30 and it still occurs. What are some things that would cause this problem?

Is my engine dying with 135,000 miles on it?

Just wanted to get your opinions before a break down and take it to the GM dealer.

Thanks.

First thing I would check would be the gauge. Hook a mechanical gauge up to see if it really is at that pressure. If the reading is different than you need a new sending unit. If not you might have bearing clearance issues.

135k is a good long run. Hook a mechanical gauge to it as 96 Formula recommended, sending units are just an electronic device and they are not above fault after this much time in service.

When you did your oil change, did you happen to examine the drain plug? Did it have any fragments on it that appeared to sparkle or be metallic in nature?

No, I didnt notice any metallic fragments. Of course there may have been some but I didnt notice. Of course Im told if I ever find those in the oil its game over, only matter of time then.

It could need a new oil pressure sensor.

Not fun to get the sending unit on a 94. See what the resistance is when it is idling. It should be around 10 ohms. In the RH kick panel is a white 10 pin connector. The tan wire goes to the sender. You could measure the resistance there after you disconnect it.

But I doubt you'll do it and take to a stealer anyway.

Thanks for the help guys.

It was the "sender unit". Oil had seeped though the housing into the 3-pin connecter. Replaced with a brand new one and it works perfectly.
