Low mount alternator

Anybody done this, have a bracket, where can you get a bracket, is it possible? I originally thought it might fit nicely where the A/C pump was, but the ALT is a little too big, anybody know if its possible?

i have heard people talking about this. I have seen a person use the vette setup in a WC Camaro. I don't know how this would work on a street car. I would think that March has to have something.

Let me know, I'm intrested

Im thinking Im going to have to fabricate somethign myself, March makes them for SBCs, but Id have to think that since our compartements are so cramped that it wouldnt fit, plus they are like $400. I think if the bracket for PS/AC/ALT, if it is grinded out where the AC pump was the ALT might fit, and then it would just need brackets welded on or something, or possibly it would fit where the AIR pump was, I dont know how the belt would work though.

Both Madman and Steve10 sell alternator relocation bracket/kits. Unless there have been some recent mods, then they both do away with the stock accessory bracket, ac compressor, and the power steering pump. I believe these are the only 2 prefabbed alternator relocation bracket kit's that are available though. Both are well under $400...

Here's Steve10's:

I'm running the madman bracket - little more expensive, but Madman's in town, so I was able to run across town and pic it up - same day

That would be cool, but Im not deleting PS. It would be real easy if PS was gone since that whole bracket wouldnt be there. But for a car to be a true "street car" I believe it should retain at least PS and heat. Ill probably just have to figure something out on my own, if anyone knows of others though feel free to chime in.

I think the AIR pump idea is out of the question, since the alternator would probably stick out to far. I have a spare accessory bracket, so I might try something with it. I work at my uncles machine shop, so I can have just about anything made. The hard part would be getting the spacing right so the belt would have the proper tension, and also keeping the alternator in line with everything else. I too wouldn't want to give up power steering for this.

I think having a couple brackets welded on, with adjustable slots instead of holes would probably work the best. Then you could tighten it down, and keep putting the belt on until it is in the right spot. Then I could mark that spot and have some brackets made that would just have a hole. If I fabbed something up like this, how much would you guys pay? I am guessing the AC delete belt would probably be needed. It would take some engineering, but I might just give this a shot.

Well I am interested in trying this myself too to save $$, but if we both try it and swap ideas I think that would be cool, and if one of us figures it out and the other cant then just buy it, Id pay for materials and say $20 labor, its not that important to me, Im just trying to clean up the bay and save time taking off valve covers.

Well, I wouldn't even do it to make money, but my uncle might help if he gets something out of it. I think $50 wouldn't be unreasonable. The labor would definately be more than the material, since there is an unlimites supply of scrap at the shop. I am going to tak a look at my spare bracket tomorrow. Shoot me an email and we can discuss ideas.

Sounds good man, anybody else that is interested or have ideas feel free to let us know, I think this could stir up quite a bit of interest if it can be done without removing power steering.

I think it can be done without eliminating PS. If not, then I am definately not gonna do it. I would rather have a visible alternator than not be able to turn my car, lol.

One of the TT guys (sleeperz28) that posts in the forced induction section has relocated his alternator and power steering pump . You might poke around over there for ideas.

http://www.augsburg.edu/ppages/~chial/camarosite.htm

His pics load slow though.

Another option might be to use steve10s brackets for the alternator and custom fab a relocation mount for the power steering on the drivers side - opposite of the alternator.

You may find a way to make the stock accessory bracket work if you hack it enough, but I think is too big n bulky, will stick out to far, and end-up being in the way.

Good luck guys...

Well Im about 98% done, pictures are posted below. The only thing i need now is a pulley (just like the alternator pulley) with a bearing in it, to bolt to the stock alternator mount that is still there, for belt routing purposes, either that or if someone knows whether i would be able to get a replacement pulley for the PS pump that is an internal groove. Let me know. All i gotta hope for now is that it goes in the bay, I dont see a problem its no bigger than the AC compressor, maybe 1/2" but its about 3" shorter.

I think it will fit. There is quite a bit of extra room. I think you could just buy a bunch of different belts and find one that fits good without having a pulley for the old alternator spot. Or maybe the AC delete pulley would be pretty close. I totally forgot about this. I was gonna look into it, but I have been busy with work and lazy when I wasn't working, lol. How much do you want for one?

Actually its not a fabricated bracket, its just the stock accessory bracket cut up with a sawzaw and then grinded down a little. The alternator bolts right into one of the holes that was already in the bracket for the AC, and the other is held by that little aluminum piece I made, that was the only thing ive had to add to it so far. I would make these for people on demand, but Id have to buy a new bracket and start from there, so however much the bracket is plus like $35 would be cool, i cant really say so yet though since i havent found a pulley yet.
