Loud tapping from #2 cylinder

Oil pressure seems down a bit.

At first I would just hear the tapping at idle once in a while. Would go away at higher rpm.

Went to the track today and went 4mph slower and thats when I popped somthing.

Very loud tapping from #2 cylinder. Goes up with the rpm.

Car was also running hot after that. Very hot.

Its not the rockers but I saw there was play in the first rocker. I tightened it down and it was still tapping.

Collapsed lifter??

Thanx.

I have extra lifters so no biggie.

What does a collapsed lifter look like anyways?

I flat spotted a the roller of the lifter doing a tuning run one time, it made a sound like that...and chewed through the came with not that many miles on it...so I wouldn't drive it.

Visually the lifter will likely appear fine. When a hydraulic lifter "collapses" is when the spring breaks. When you take out the lifter try pressing down on the area where the pushrod seats...normally you will be able to depress about 1/8th or 1/4th of an inch or so. There will also be reisstance from the spring when you press down. If there is no play and it won't depress at all becuase it is allready sitting at base.

Curious, what happened to the rest of the engine after that happened? Did you just put in a new cam and lifters and kept trucking, or were the engine bearings shot from the metal in the engine?

I'm hoping I didn't ruin the cam but I did have to drive the car for an hour at 2200rpm from the track.

Its an LE2 cam.

If I shined a light down the lifter hole I should be able to tell right?

2 weeks ago I had to change my #5 intake CompR lifter out, I was blessed in that the plunger, spring & two halves of the retainer were all just laying in the intake valley. Hopefully yours will be all together and just in a weakened state, etc.
