Loud Clack When Throttle Is Quickly Pushed
Loud Clack When Throttle Is Quickly Pushed
I was under the hood of my car and gave it a couple quick revs. When I did it from an idle, I noticed that I get a clack. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the valve train. I have roller rockers and was wanting to know if this sounds like some are a little (or really) loose. I'm going to pull the valve covers when I get a chance, but I wanted to see what you guys thought. Also, I'm having MAP problems (too high) and brake problems (hard to push) and Injuneer told me that valve adjustment can cause this. What do you guys think? Maybe I'll get some time this week to adjust the valves. Thanks for the input guys.

I think that Injuneer is exactly right. That can cause your problem and I'd bet that you have one or more rockers that are loose or out of adjustment. Once you find out which one is loose. leave the valve covers off and fire it up. Don't rev it though unless you want oil on your garage walls! With it at idle you won't have any oil spirting out. Do this just to make sure that it is running right before you go putting everything back together. Press your brakes and also your Map on a scaner if you have one available. Then put the covers back on. Good luck
Re: Loud Clack When Throttle Is Quickly Pushed
It takes a little while for the oil to work its way up to the top of the heads. If you just lay some tin foil over your headers you should be just fine, and if you are still worried about oil getting anywhere lay a rag over your inner fenderwell. I don't get any spirting at idle (stock oil pump) until after I let it run for abot three or four min. then I may get a little but nothing to worry about. Just trying to save you a good ammount of time with re-installing the alternator and covers. Plus, it's easier to T/S a noise problem with the covers off. Good luck and post the results if you get a chance.
Re: Loud Clack When Throttle Is Quickly Pushed
I got it done and I still have a loud clack when I goose the throttle. I don't know if maybe the lifters aren't all the way pumped up at idle or what. My map sensor is still reading ~.65-.7 bar at idle, which from what I've read, is too high. These little things can kill you. I appreciate the help though.

Re: Loud Clack When Throttle Is Quickly Pushed
What kind of lifters are you running? Hopefully not Comp R's!!! I've had a really bad experience with those lifters. Is the noise that you are hearing only at idle? Can you narrow it down to where it is coming from? I use a long handled screw driver and put my ear to it as I have the other end on top of the rocker arm adjustment nut to see which valve is making the noise. If you can find out exactly where your noise is at, that would help you out a lot.
Re: Loud Clack When Throttle Is Quickly Pushed
They're comp r's. From what I can hear, I only get it when the car is idling and I crack the throttle. With the rpms up, it doesn't do it. I'll check each valve when I have the covers off again, which won't be long. I want to double check everything again. I wonder what it could be. Thanks for the help.

If ya hold it at 2000 and goose it does it CLACK? If not ya got a detonation problem.
You were posting while I was writing.
