Lot of heat from shifter console & outside the passenger side area + clunking sound
I have a big problem with my '94 Z and hope you can help me to point it down.
After driving the car for a few minutes the Center console area around the shifter starts to get quite warm. On a 30min drive it gets REALLY HOT, almost to the point were you don't want to touch it anymore, especially on the passenger side.
Also if you stand outside of the car, infront of the passenger door there is a lot of heat coming from below... so much that you can hardly stand there for too long.
The other thing that I can't figure out is a crunching noise also coming from the shifter area. It sounds like the clutch plate is broken. I noticed that most of the time it comes on is when I rev the engine to a higher RPM.
I really doubt it's coming from the transmission. I had a new clutch, flywheel and pressure disc installed 800 miles ago. Plus I had everything looked at, by a transmission shop, so I really outrule the transmission. Besides that, the synthoms were already there before.
I thought it might be a clogged or defective cat converter but since I don't have a power loss or my SES light come on I'm not sure. Could all these synthoms point down to a cat converter problem, eventhough I don't have a powerloss ??
Any other ideas what could cause these problems ?
Thanks for your help,
Alex

Re: Lot of heat from shifter console & outside the passenger side area + clunking sound
I think your heat issue is the cat. On a 94, you won't get a SES light for the cat, only on OBDII cars (96 and up). Might want to check your tranny mount for the clunking noise. ALso double check that there aren't any loose bolts from the clutch install (torque arm mount, exhaust hanger).

Has anyone else experienced a similar heat problem ?
Can a T-56 develop that kind of heat too ? Other than that, the cat shound be the only part creating heat.
Okay I will check for any loose bolts, but like I said, it sounds make like a broken flexplate than a loose bolt. As for the transmission mount, I have a poly mount which I think is pretty noisy

next time it gets that hott , pull over and look under the car, i bet ur cat is glowing red hott,
do u have any problems revving teh engine in the higher rpms?

Re: Lot of heat from shifter console & outside the passenger side area + clunking sound
I just went under the car and knocked against the cat to see if somthing is rattling inside... negative... sounded like an empty tin can.
As far as reving the engine up. I have the feeling as if the car gets to high rpms a little harder than its supposed to be. Plus I've noticed a little miss while trying to rev it up.
Do you guys still vote for the cat ??

Thanks for all your help so far, I should be able to get car on a lift this weekend or early next week. Hopefully it will turn out to be just the cat and nothing else. I'll keep you guys updated
Re: Lot of heat from shifter console & outside the passenger side area + clunking sound
I myself rule out the Cat. I have the same problem as you, but I don't have a cat. I have a y-pipe going straight to my flowmaster muffler, but it still gets EXTREMELY HOT inside and I don't know why.

Re: Lot of heat from shifter console & outside the passenger side area + clunking sou
My center console allways gets really hot like that. The passangers allways cry and tell me to turn my heater off when it allready is. I allways just thought it was because i never put in the plastic boot that goes over the shifter. I have a brand new cat so i wouldint think it to be that. Maybe its just normal.

Don't know about the six speeds, but my automatic did the same thing. Lots of heat from the center console and under the car. It ended up being the transmission, it went out completely a few days later.

i also have that problem with my 94..the shifter gets hot then if you stand outside on the passenger side the heat comes rite at u
