Cam surge (not a is this cam surge thread)

Ok i realize i have surge (le1 pack with upgraded valves) but i want to fully understand its consept, i posted in advanced tech with little responce. I want to understand what causes surge and what is going on in my engine, i read that its the pollution in the intake stream from overlap, but why would the engine buck, i would think it would just lack power, it almost feels like a miss but madwolf (ion) said i definitly had surge!

I don't have a full answer for you. One thing I know is the 02 sensor setup goes crazy. Because of the different overlap the 02s see a suden rich condition and then lean it out when its not needed. So now all of a sudden the a/f is overly lean and the computer freaks and dumps fuel into it. I know when mine was surging my a/f guage was either rich or lean, never sweeping back and forth like its supposed to..

I compared my before and after tunes, basically Brian added fuel and timing in the areas where I was surging. That cleaned it up for me.

Did you have it dyno'd to see your surge area's or just by hooking up a wideband or what, i really gotta get this surge minimized!

Wideband and just feeling it. I told Bryan (my tuner) its surging bad between 2 and 3K, or something like that. He knew what to do, and the changes to the fuel/timing were very minimal to fix the problem. Dyno for wot tuning (unless you rent the thing and can play with cruising speeds) the rest we just did sotp and with datamaster.

One way to decrease cam surge is to increase timing bit-by-bit until it is minimized. Your tuner should not have a problem doing that for you.
