Lot of difference between 245 & 255 on 8" wheel?
I was fortunate to score an AWESOME deal on some 18x8 wheels - but was less fortunate in the fact of just that - they are only 8 inches wide.
I am gonna buy some new tires soon - and here's the dilemma.
The tires I really want only come in a 245 or 265 (and 265 on an 8" wheel = :thumbs down
...
However - tires like the tires I have now come in a 255, but they aren't exactly what I want (although I like the tires and would buy them again).
So how much of a difference is there going to be between a 245 and a 255? A 245 has a section width of 9.7 inches on an 8" rim, and a 255 has a section width of 10.1 on a 8.5" rim - they don't "recommend" a 255 on an 8" so there's no measurement for that. I am suspecting it would be close though, or maybe .1 or .2 max lower.
With all that said, what's your guys' thoughts on the matter?

Sometimes you need to pass up the "awesome deal", when it forces you to compromise what you really want.

Even though there is the difference between the 17" to 18" - I don't see how it is really "good", "normal", "possible", "OK", or anything to run a 275 on an 8" rim - regardless of diameter. Can you please explain to me? I am genuinely curious...
My logic between him (93Z286Speed) telling me that and your explination thus far is - so, it's ok to run a 275 on a 17"x8", but not even a 255 on 18"x8" - although a 245 is recommended for an 8" wide rim period...but you can go 30mm over with a 17", but not even 10mm with an 18"?
So, why's there such a difference? (Fred - trying not to sound arrogant, or anything else - just honestly wondering...)
I guess I just put too much faith in the tire manufacturers' "injuneers"..... they want to sell tires... why would they tell you not to put a 275/35-18 on an 8" wide wheel and lose a sale?
Maybe because its not a good idea. The tire contact patch will be distorted, the distortion will reduce traction and responsiveness, the excess flexing will overheat the tire and reduce the life of the cord, the tread will bow out and wear the center tread excessively........ a few things that come to mind.
I didn't make the numbers up... if you take the time to go to Tire Rack and do a search on the sizes you want, and the manufacturers you are interested in, you can look at the "specs" for each tire and see what the manufacturer recommends - not all manufacturers have the same rim recommendations for a specific tire, or for different lines of tires from the same manufacturer. You chose to believe them or not.... its up to you. No difference to me....
.
I was just trying to steer you in the right direction (pun intended).....
