Lost 28+ hp through stock cat-back, not good, what do I need?

I was surprised I lost that much vs. my cut-out. No doubt my mods make a difference now but the cut-out is too loud and the stock cat-back is robbing too much so I need to do something.
How much more is there to be gained from a larger I-pipe? I don't want to just install a muffer and still be disapointed at the loss.
What do I need to have no more than around 10-12 hp loss??

get a mufflex 4inch exhaust or just run true duals, I would go with the duals you wont lose much power at all ! But the mufflex is the next best thing.

duals are muffled and exit out the rear, cutouts are not muffled and they exit under the car. a cutout is louder, or at least rumbles more than duals.

From what i have heard, seen, and whitnessed, Borla(even there race mufflers) sux, flowmasters are even worse.

I HIGHLY recomend the straight through designs of the SLP loudmouth(hears it really load tho), the SLP TOTL or Dynomax ultra flo welded.

The SLP TOTL is probally the best over all, flows as a good as a pipe, quite at idle and cruising but screams when you get on it. the dynomax ultra flo weldeds are basically the same thing but a biut louder.

I have had the SLP TOTL (OEM on SS) went to flowmaster, then currently dynomax, no i am putting the SLP back on

I wouldn't go 4 inch unless you have considerable upped the cubes or are running boost

Hookcat back it also good. 4 inch might too much unless you are going to a 383.

I have a SLP Loudmouth on my 95 LT1 and it's loud. Anything above 1,500 RPM and you definetly hear it coming from far away. It does sound mean, but sometimes I think it might be a little excessive for everyday driving. It seemed to help in the HP dept, but I have no real proof to back that up, just feels that way, or could be the sound making me think it's faster? Anyhow. I have heard from many on this board that it flows great and is much better then the stock exhaust. It doesn't even really have a muffler at all, just a resonator tube.

I have the 2OTL and love it but think it will look dumb with your ground effects. It's quite up until just over 2k rpms then it starts to howl.

For dual exit setups on a budget I like the hooker or the SLP dual exit. The loudmouth is a lil too much IMO. Not as bad as a cutout, I don't understand why so many poeple just want their car to be as loud as possible and don't care about the sound quality.

Magna Flow catbacks were dynoed on a heads/cam LS-1 and only showed 1 hp diffrence between the full exaust and a cut-out. They are pretty quiet and are very nice looking to. Not to mention there stainless w/ polished tips and for around $300 you can't beat it.

I remember reading somewhere a while back that a guy dynoed an open from the cat exhaust, then put on a Random Tech exhaust, and lost nothing. May be BS, may not. I like the Random Tech in the fact that the muffler is straight through. Should provide minimal loss.

Any catback with a straight through design muffler will suit your needs. I'd take a look at Magnaflow, SLP 2OTL, or Random Technology. I know there is a guy on the board who only lost 6 rwhp with the SLP 2OTL vs. his cutout, he had a CC306 cam making about 350 rwhp.

go with borla. if you want to you can always open it up and it becomes the same as a cut out.

Out of curiousity where was the cutout and was he running cats/ORP and headers/manifolds?

Hey Dan, how about a McCord power plate or the like. When you need the power at the track, open it up and when you want quietness at the streets, close it. I think it’s a good compromise in your situation.
