Friend drove down from Orlando to Miami yesterday in his used 95 5.7L Formula. Engine started to lose power on the turnpike, he stopped for lunch and after the car cooled a little things were better. About 40 miles later the power loss came back along with severe missing at idle. He got to my house but even after cooling off overnight the missing (somewhat intermittent) was still there. He went to the parts store and the engine died in slow traffic. It restarted but missed badly. The car has 120,000 miles and he has only owned a few months.

I replaced the air filter (very dirty), and the AC Delco fuel filter (lots of crap came out), and during a once over noticed two wires going to the bottom accesory passenger side (air pump I think) that where rubbing the engine belt. After moving the battery I could see the wires had been butt-spliced before (I assume from chafting) but then weren't secured properly so it happened again. After repairing those wires, and the fitler, the car runs fine.

Not sure what I fixed, fuel filter, or the chafting wires shorting out the ECU, but thought it might help someone else. I'm glad it wasn't the dizzy or fuel pump.

My vote goes to the fuel filter only cause I owned a carburated Ford long time ago and one day it just lost power... misfired.. etc... when it cooled off it ran fine but it got worse very quickly... I replaced the fuel filter and it ran like a champ.

I noticed it would loose power shortly after I gunned the gas pedal and it just occured to me it may have been running out of gas.

It seems yours right about the fuel filter.

My friend got home, but on the way the tank got low and the problem started again. It's not as severe as before, but now at least he knows that a dirty tank is the problem.

I guess the wires had nothing to do with it.
