Loss of Oil Pressure
Loss of Oil Pressure
Ok I posted the other day of how my car was running hot. It probably hit 260 a few times but everytime I'd pull over asap and shut off the engine or sometimes it would drop before I even pulled over. Well my low oil light came on yesterday. I check the oil and it's at the add mark so i add some oil. I watch my oil pressure and at idle it's the same 20 or so psi but now when I rev it it doesnt move as much. It use to go to about 40 with a nice rev but now it only goes to about 25-30. Could my engine have gotten damaged from overheating? I'm really worried and i'm really pissed off at the same time because I try to take good care of my car but crap like this has to happen. Engine only has 60 thousand miles on it and we knew the previous 2 owners and know they took care of it. I"m changing the oil right now so if anyone has any ideas then please let me know.
Re: Loss of Oil Pressure
Ok I changed the oil (Mobil 1 10w-20 Syn) and it had 40 psi at idle like usual. Once it got warmed up it had 20 maybe a tad over idle which is just like it was before. So I go out to test drive it and it wasen't moving much. It use to go to about 30psi at 2 to 3 thousand rpms but now it would barely move and at wot I hit about 25-30 tops. So what could be causing this? Is my engine shot?
Re: Loss of Oil Pressure
Possible your oil pickup has fallen off. After you added oil did you verify you added enough? It's possible when you ran low on oil you could have scored a cam bearing or something. I had similar results when my front cam bearing was worn down to virtually nothing...although on top of oil pressure being about 20-25 psi at WOT (and about 10-15 at idle) my car was idling very rough.
As a side note, 20-25 psi at idle is pretty normal. Both my LT-1s when warmed up would drop to around 20-25 psi at idle, and around 40psi cruising and 55-60 at WOT.

Re: Loss of Oil Pressure
If it got that hot, you probably broke the oil down enough to decrease the viscosity. New oil will most likely be the answer. If the oil pickup fell off, you would know it because it would read 0 and your engine would be locked up by now.
