looking to step up from 306

I have had my 383 running for over a year now. I think I am ready to step up to diffrent set up. it is currently a 12.5:1 cr forged pistons, rods, crank, stock casting heads that flow 289I 199E at .600, com 306 with 1.6 rr, 1 3/4 long long tubes, stock tb. that car makes 411rwhp, 400rwtq. I made a few trips down the track. 3 to be exact on street tires it ran 12.2@ 118 with 2.2 60ft the car weighs 3695 race weight.

I am looking to step up the cam I would like to stay under .600 lift. Because I dont want to swap springs. I am not scared up a custom grind but I kind of like the idea of an off the shelf because the are proven. thank you for any andvice or recomendations. T

GTP6 is a proven cam but just an alteration of the 306. What about the XE 236/242, or maybe even solid roller...?

I could go with a solid roller. but then I have to replace all the rest of the parts I was looking for just a cam swap. to keep cost and time down.

I see alot of people running the XE 236/242 as Matt suggested. I'm thinking about using it as well when I build my 383.

Why not get a custom grind cam that matches what your heads flow? Or how about a CC XE 234/246 on 112LSA custom grind I bet you would like that.

a 306 with 1.6 rockers is 230-244 .544-.576 112
a 236-242 with 1.6 rockers is 236-242 .555-.576 112

I might be missing something but it does not seem like it would offer large power advantages.

But your comparing two different cams. The 236/242 is a XE cam. Go ahead and call Comp and ask what the difference is between the 2 but I guaruntee you that they will tell you the XE cam will make more power than the 306. I don't know exactly how the XE works but it has something to do with faster ramp rates and various things like that. Also, XE cams are supposed to produce for vaccum at idle compared to other large cams.

I haven't seen any of the XE cams perform very well at all, so i personally wouldn't go that route. Them making more torque downlow seems to be BS as well.

I don't think you will see a dramatic power gain unless you go solid roller.

All the XE cams I've seen that don't perform very well are the ones on stock heads. Once you got P&P heads they're supposed to perform a hell of alot better.
