looking for the right headers: recommendations

I'm looking for some headers that are easy installation with good performance.

so far I'm looking at these:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ho...ro?prefilter=1

My car is a California emissions car and the catalytic converter must remain in the stock spot to insure passing MD's emissions test.

to my knowledge only shorty headers can be put on my vehicle to assure it being emissions friendly.

anyways if anyone has used these headers or has any recommendations for any other headers, I would love to hear them.

My budget for this is $500ish

I have pacesetter and Mac headers, both keep cat in stock position. My opinion is the pacesetter were easier to install and cheaper.

Do some research online. Not sure about California but I think so, they have all the hookups. They changed my exhaust tone to a deeper sound which I liked alot better.

this is my research

ive been looking at a lot of headers and a lot of cams recently but can never find my specific set up on the web and its hard to find good information when you have only a basic knowledge of these cars.

its also hard making sure everything is legal as this is my DD.

Maybe I missed it, but what year is your car? The single-cat (93/94/95 6-speed) and dual-cat (95 automatic/96/97) require significantly different header designs. You linked a dual-cat design, but you mention only a "catalytic converter" (singular).

You mention your car is a "California emissions" car. Do you actually live in California? I saw a thread recently where someone from another state thought he had to follow CA emissions regulations since his car had the CA emission approval sticker.

There is a CARB website that has list of CARB-EO approved aftermarket auto parts.

For future reference, you need to add a "Signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, trans and any major mods. That helps us provide you with more accurate info. If you need help setting up a Signature, let me know.

[EDIT] OK... you are the person that lives in MD, but thinks you have to follow CA emissions. I explained to you in your other thread why this is not correct.

Ok, lets start by saying that MD emissions states that if the check engine light is on the car will automatically fail emissions testing.

It is to my understanding that if I don't use california emissions friendly stuff it will trigger my check engine light and therefor fail emissions.

Im no expert so like you have stated I could be wrong.

My car is a 95 z28 with t56 and a single cat.

My only mods are a K&N air intake and a American thunder flowmasters exhaust.

I tried figuring out how to put up a signature line but could not find it in my limited search. EDIT: found it and posted

also you say that the hooker headers listed above are a dual cat headers system but it doesn't say that, how do I tell in the future which is which?

Re: looking for the right headers: recommendations

I would go with OBX 1 3/4 stainless .16g full length headers. That will run you 300-350 then a y-pipe will cost another 150, bang there is your $500 bucks. If you do go with the painted headers make sure to burn off the paint before installing the O2 sensors, ask me how I know. You can register your car as a collector car for a year, then as a classic in 2015 and not worry about emissions. If you want info on how to get around emissions send me a pm.

its a daily driver though so I cant register historic in 2015.

how do you burn the paint off the headers? with a torch? I was planning on the second set I posted and then was planning on using high temp ceramic coat sprayed on by me.

Burning off paint only to repaint/coat isn't the best idea. Sand blasting or media blasting is the best way.

BTW, a true ceramic coat can't be done by the average person because of the heat required to cure it.

So I'm not familiar with MD emissions but based on your criteria listed above (Check Engine = Failed Emissions) you could run anything you want. I have Pacesetter LT's with an offroad y-pipe (not cats), and have deleted my EGR/AIR. You can have all of that tuned out and not throw a SES light. Now if you have a sniffer, maybe you'll need a catalytic converter. Research your local laws. I have no emissions testing in Kansas.

so if I dont media blast the headers before installation then they will throw off my obd2 sensor?

my local emissions place checks for a cat and does the exhaust sniff. I wish we didnt have emissions because I could go all out with my car, unfortunately though I do.
