Long tubes will provide substantial horsepower over a shorty-style header, due to the improved exhaust scavaging characteristics because of the longer primaries. Shorties are emissions legal, and have EGR and AIR fittings.

Most long tubes will fail emissions, and all long tubes will fail visual inspection, because of the relocation and/or deletion of catalytic converters, which is illegal in most states.

Mid-length headers are a good alternative to either. MACs and AS&Ms provide almost the gains of long tubes, but still remain emissions legal.

For strip use only though, I'd definitely go with long tubes. Keep in mind, you will need to have a custom y-pipe created, as long tubes will not bolt up to the factory exhaust.

Definately get long tubes over shorties. You'll pick up a lot more horsepower with the long tubes. Like RamAir said...the long tubes have better exhaust scavenging. Meaning you will get 10-15 more horsepower to the ground with a long tube on a bolt-on car. The benefits will be even greater than that with a cam and/or heads.

Do you need a custom Y-Pipe to run the MAC headers? On either a dual cat 96+ or a single cat 95?

I think theres a header that bolts right to the stock Y-Pipe, I think it was SLP....

MACS come w/ a ypipe, and that's definitly the way to go if you don't go w/ longtubes.

MACs for my car would be different though since I have a dual cat setup. In fact I think they're more expensive for a dual cat car....

I thought that with a stock car and cam the shorties gave it a better punch, since you get the torque down low the LTs dont give you and since you are not pumping that much air out, the total gains are the same, so shorties where the way to go with a stock car. If you later modify I know its long tubes.. but for stock
