Long story short..new shifter???

OK, long story short. I'm gutting my interior and before I knew it I had the center console off and everything taken apart. Now I think I might as well put a new short throw shifter in...since everything is apart.
How hard is it, and how do you install a new shifter. I think it should be pretty easy. Anyone have a write-up or a link to directions? Also, what do you guys recommend for the shifter..Pro 5.0....Hurst??
Thanks as always guys.

It's VERY simple. The hardest part is taking the center console off. It's just 4 bolts, remove shifter, line up the next one and bolt it down. If you have stops, adjust them. Some people also use sealant between the shifter and the top of the tranny. You should really get a shifter to, I couldn't imagine driving without one.

Most people here will recommend a Pro 5.0, Hurst, or B&M Ripper. Kirban also makes decent shifters, and to be honest with you, I had an SLP shifter that I was very happy with as well. It's a definite improvement over the stock stick.

Dumb question, but what are stops? How do I tell if I have them? If I do, how do I adjust them?
Thanks

They are just two bolts on the shifter on the front of the stick and the back of the stick. Basically it controls the travel of the stick so you don't go too far. The T-56 has stops in it but some shifters like my B&M have stops too. You just move the stick into gear and adjust the stop/turns the bolt so it's just inside where the stick ends its travel and you're good.

I guess the stops will be more evident to me when I pull the stock shifter off. Can I use RTV sealant on the bottom of the new shifter? Do I put the car in say 1st gear, then put the new shifter in 1st gear, and the two should mate up and just drop in? Sorry for so many questions but I've screwed up enough things on this car "just trying" stuff, and I don't really want to screw this up.
Thanks

Did you even purchase a shifter yet? If not, it will come with very detailed instructions.
