Lifter Valley Screens....Yah or Nay?
Lifter Valley Screens....Yah or Nay?
I'm in the middle of a 383 build and I got to thinking that this might be a good time to add lifter valley screens since the block is in the perfect shape (no oil residue) to add screens.
I figured I should install the screens before hand and then paint.
Basically, I'm going to paint the lifter bore with some high temp paint to smooth out the casting flash to help speed oil return.
Anyone have an opinion on this or has done a similar setup and wants to share results or tips?

Jeff,
I do the screens, but I don't sand down the lifter valleys and paint them. I open up the drainback holes and then put screens on them. There are also some areas that need to be ground out of the block as well to help with drain back, especially on aftermarket heads. If you do screens then you should plug the other holes that you don't screen.
You want to make sure you do all of this before the cam bearings and plugs go in. I do all of this before I do anything else to the block.

That's the problem...this is an after thought.
My shortblock is already together and I just now thought about it.
No paint is cool...I wasn't sure how much of a benefit it would be anyhow.
I was thinking of using the below kit:

Is there any reason why I shouldn't use the screen? I just think of it as added protection for very little cost.
