Lift Question

How much lift should I get on a custom grind cam for a car with stock heads?

I don't think I will ever port them someone told me that stock heads will only flow to about .420 lift. Now if I get a cam that has .560 lift am I just putting unnecessary stress on the valvetrain and wasting gas?

Or am I raising my DCR and making more power?? If I won't make anymore power on a stock head car by raising the lift I won't do it but I don't know??

Anyone have experience with going to a 1.6rr on a stock head car and dynoing it to see if they picked up anything? At what point does the lift become excessive on a stock head lt1? Will I make more power past .500 lift??

Re: Lift Question

If you have stock heads... getting anything higher then 420 is pointless in my opinion... why waste the money?? If you definately plan on changing heads in the future... go ahead and do it.

Re: Lift Question

The stock cam lift is 0.459" if I remember correctly and increasign the lift to 0.49 by putting on 1.6 rcocker has been proven to give good results. There are benefits from increasing the lift to 0.56 on stock heads, although the peak lift flow might not improve past a certain limit but it will improve everywehere alse.
A small cam I'm running on my Impala has about 0.55 lift on the ex. with 1.6 rockers. And that's a proven preformer.

Re: Lift Question

Well, that is the reason I am asking since I am getting a custom grind I can save some coin and just have the cam grinder grind the lift around .500 and be happy that that is as good as it is going to get with stock heads. Am I right?? I really want more power in the bottomend-midrange.

Re: Lift Question

dont get a custom grind if thats the case. pick one out from combination motorsports or comp... they have tons of guaranteed proven power cams. getting a custom grind cam is a roll of the dice... you never know whats going to happen.
