lets talk about oil pans
well, through all this building up of a 383, splayed mains, lightweight I beam rods, forged pistons, should I be upgrading my oil pan? I am runnin the stocker, with a high volume oil pump, with the pickup already welded for my stocker. I have restrictors in the top end so only a little oil goes to the roller rockers, as they don't need that much. That way more is forced to the cam and crank. I have never had a problem, and it is a daily driver. I figure will all this money Im droppin into the motor this year, should a new pan be needed or considered? I have heard horror stories about runnin out of 5 quarts of oil, but I have pushed my car hard without any problems. But, preventive matinence is the key!

Re: lets talk about oil pans
if your runnin a high volume pump its likely to pump all the oil to the top on astock pan and if you got the room in your budget i would, i got a canton on mine fits great and its got all the goodies built in it if you have longtubes you'll have to ditch the low oil sensor but definetly a good investment!
Re: lets talk about oil pans
I have the Canton road race pan in my car- part #242t I believe. My forged rotating assembly was hittin the stock windage tray, so one of the reasons I got the Canton pan was a built in tray and crank scraper that would clear. That and the added oil capacity. I have Hooker long tubes and they barely clear the low oil level sensor. Mine are coated so I'm hoping that the heat won't be an issue.
Re: lets talk about oil pans
damn! I am lookin at that 15-242T and its expensive! Best price so far is 269. Thats outrageous. Can you use whatever oil pump with your stock pickup? I have my pickup welded to my new high volume oil pump, but I am sure I can grind the spot weld off and reposition it if needed. Do you have to run their gasket, or does the GM one work fine? You know, come to think of it, if my pan was running out of oil wouldn't my low oil sender kick on the old idiot light on my dash? That must mean I am not using up all my oil! Also, I had to clearance the windage tray for my stroker, but it was a pretty easy and cheap fix!
Any more?

Re: lets talk about oil pans
If oil is the only thing that lets your motor live, why does everyone think that synthetic oil and good oil pans are too expensive? It's more expensive to REBUILD THE DAM MOTOR!
If you are running a 383 get the Canton pan and call it a day. That is the standard pan I put on any LT1 motor I build.

Re: lets talk about oil pans
Get the right pickup to go with the pan too.
Welding the pickup is not necessary if the pickup is installed correctly and is not a used pickup.Make sure it is no more than 1/2" from the bottom of the pan. Make sure the pickup is installed streight and all the way to the larger dia on the tube(the knot)
The Canton 242 is a NICE pan and ya have no worries about oil control.
