left turn signal will not shut off
left turn signal will not shut off
If this is the wrong board, please move this, however I did a search and saw a lot of these questions posted here (but none like this)
Anways, the left turn signal works, you *snap* it like always and the blinker blinks, all the left turn signals light, and they blink at a proper speed (Not too slow or fast) however they will not turn off unless you actually hit the stalk up. You can turn the wheel all the way to the right and nothing....still blinking.
Of course the right side works fine
so I doubt it is a bulb, flasher, or relay. I would venture to guess some sort of a spring/ratcheting mechanism that is broke.
My question is, what is broke, and where can I buy a replacement part (Anybody have a GM P/N?) and lastly, do I have to rip apart the steering column to fix it? I'd rather not because I want the AirBag to work properly and I hate working around airbags...

9 times out of 10 it;s the spring in the turn signal switch under the steering wheel..
if not then it;s probably the switch itself. you will have to get the wheel and clockspring off to see fore sure

Thanks HBHRacing. How difficult is it to pull the wheel? I do have a cruise stalk if it makes a difference.
I know you need a wheel puller, I had to yank a wheel off a non-airbag car a while back...
Anybody know of a good writeup, chilton's and hayes are such lousy manuals.....

funny you should ask.. I am acualy making a write up for it.. bt it's not done yet,,
first you have to diable the airbag.. do not leave anythin to chance. unhook the neg battery termonal, remove the SIR/Air bag fuse, go under the dash and unplug the yellow SIR connector.. no go inside and grab a drink for about 10 minutes. you do this because there is a power retaining module that will hold enought power to deploy the airbag even with a dead car..
now. turn the wheels straight and lock the wheel in place. Use a T27 (Ibelive) Torx bit to remove the 2 bolts holding the air bag cover on. unplug the connector and place the aire bag on a solid serface NOT CARPRT OR SEATS.. I would use anything that will not create static.
now. you can remove the nut holding the wheel on and use a puller to get the wheel of.
with that out of the way you need a tool called a lock spring compressor. use that to Gently apply pressure to the clock spring until you can remove the snap ring. then back off the tool and remove the clock spring.
now you can get at the lock plate, using the lock plate tool do the same as before untill you can get at the clip. you need to pick the clip out but do not bend it or if you do just get a new one (your not suposed to reuse them anyway)
once you get that off you will be able to see the turn signal switch and repair or replace anything you need.
when you put everything back together watch out for the clock spring. you need to reset it to make sure itls sdjusted right. turn it over and you will see a lock tab. press and hold the tab while turning the inner part in the driection of teh arrow. when it stops, back it off in the other direction 2 full tuns. then release the tab and place everything back toether.. you will notice when you remove teh clock spring that it;s suposed to fit in a certain way. just amek sure it's back in teh same way as it came oout
