Leaky Water Pump

I removed and re-installed the water pump on my z28, so that I could install a new opti then I noticed that coolant is just flowing out from the bottom of the water pump. I used new gaskets for the pump, dont know what i did wrong.??

Re: Leaky Water Pump

is it coming from where the pump mates to the block?
-did you properly torque the pump down?
-did you clean both the pump and block mating surfaces extremely well before reinstalling?
-did you use rtv on the gaskets and if so did you give it enough time to harden?
-did you clean the bolt threads and apply thread sealant to them?

or is it coming from the weep hole on the underside of the pump?
-if so time for a new pump

Brass or copper washers under the heads of the bolts help too.

Sigh...always look to shoebox first before asking these sorts of questions.

http://shbox.com/ci/fastener_matrix.html

It's 30 lb-ft if you don't want to both looking....

Don't use RTV sealer..it isn't the best choice. Use either the spray copper stuff or the Permatex non hardening form-a-gasket...even when using a gasket. Absolutely use the teflon thread sealing compound on the bolts....they thread right into the water jacket. That's probably where the leak is.

Re: Leaky Water Pump

i have used permatex ultra black the last couple times and not had an issue with it although from everything i have seen you dont need to use anything besides the gaskets themselves.

i thought i had seen somewhere not to use actual teflon tape that something along the lines of a loc tite thread sealant was preferred? i dunno

Re: Leaky Water Pump

Got it
1. Bolts torqued to 30 lbs
2. gaskets
3. Perma-Tex
4. Loc tite sealent on the bolts

I did notice that the coolant is spewing from under a bolt on the water pump. Thanks!

If you just changed the water pump, the only likely place for an oil leak is the seal around the drive shaft for the pump. To replace it you'll have to pull the water pump back off, pry out the old one adn slip the new one on. It's not hard to do.

Good luck
