leaking coolant and overheating when idleing.
leaking coolant and overheating when idleing.
for the past week my 95 z28 has been leaking coolant, i go outside and theres a huge puddle i check and theres barely any coolant left. i refill it and it overheats while idleing or sitting in traffic. when im driving normal it is perfectly fine.. another problem is you can smell gas REALLY bad, and the gas gage literally will go from full to half a tank to empty within minutes..
i have no idea if its leaking out or whats going on.
anyone else have this problem or have any suggestions or answers pleaseee let me know. this is very frustrating..

Re: leaking coolant and overheating when idleing.
Find the source of the leak and try to fix. You have a puddle to help, so where is it leaking under the car? If you are really loosing that much fuel, then there should be a puddle also. Has anything been done recently to the car that may have caused either issue?

Jack it up and lay under it with it running and see if you can see where its dripping from. There is a small hole on the bottom of the water pump that leaks when its bad, (mine did)
Re: leaking coolant and overheating when idleing.
Wouldn't it be better to just pressurize the system and look for the leak? The coolant will be cool making the risk of burns that much less.

hey guys i ended up taking her to the shop by the dealer i bought her from.. well she ran fine just leaked coolant all the way there. as soon as i parked the temp went from 180 to 250 so i shut her off right then. the dumb mechanic saw the coolant literally start puking out from under the car so he popped the hood and got in started it backed it up and as soon as he put it in drive and gave it some gas all saw was coolant and fluids gush and start spewing from under the hood and start pouring from under the car in 3 different places.. he lifted the hood coolant was everywhere ... radiator hose had blew, heater hose blew and a few other things.. so now they are replacing all the hoses, radiator, heatercore and def. a coolant flush.. and try to figure out why its overheating and why its building so much pressure to blow hoses. as for the gas. it had a bad gas cap they said. which still makes no sense to me but yea.
typical chevy.. i mean she ran perfect until that damn heater hose blew the first time. after that it was just a huge chain reaction.
guess im driving the T/A until i get her back...

Seriously, these cooling systems aren't that tough to diagnose. If there is coolant everywhere, start with the hoses, then look for bad caps or a cracked recovery tank. If it still overheats after you get the leaks fixed look to a thermostat, a clogged radiator core or a bad waterpump....
