LE1 heads-224/230 initial impressions..

Finally after a long ordeal and what not..I have received my car back tonight with newly installed ported intake and le1 heads on top of my current mods.

Firstly..the tune is a bit off. on cold startup..its definatly surging decently(it was perfectly fine cam only)..but it levels out after a few minutes warming up and much better after driving. Driving is as smooth as it was with just the cam...no bucking, etc.

After getting on it a bit..it is MUCH faster..pulls hard through the entire RPM range and especially harder up top compared to cam only. Seat of pants I'd say i'm at least in the 340-350rwhp range..but you can never really go by that..and can you really tell the difference between 350 and 360?

I am going to throw it on the dyno in about 2 weeks and get some readouts. Mechanically everything seems sound..theres no misses or anything mechanically thats apparently wrong. Once I can get the surging out of the way I'll be a happy camper .

As was said before..Lloyd has EXCELLENT customer service. Everything he said he was going to do, he did.. I got my heads back sooner than i expected, he answers every question thoroughly, etc etc.

Will keep posted about dyno numbers etc.

Lloyd is definately a man of his word. I have a feeling he will be around for a very long time.

Yes I sure hope so, you cant beat his bang for buck performance and customer service. I can't wait to get some numbers and I think theres DEFINATLY a good amount more in it with some tweaking.

With a really good tune I bet you can swing 10-15 more rwhp out of it.

Nice to read this post considering that is the exact setup I am going with. However, now that I am thinking of it, I may get the LE2 heads instead, but not positive. We will have to see how good the income tax refund is this year.

Make sure everything is working well...a tune can't cover a mechanical problem, regardless of the tuner.

According to Lloyd, le2 heads are worth 10 more hp on top of the le1 with the setup. But of course le2 heads have more potential if you swap cams, etc.

Yes i agree. i have really never had any mechanical problems with it yet. So far there seems to be nothing mechanically wrong. I drove it a good bit last night, and the only problem thats apparent is the surging at idle. Of course ill need to scan it and dyno it to find out everything that is going on. Going to see if i can get the appt for a dyno today for about 2 weeks. And I am going to order some scanning software. I shot off an email to Ion and I am going to see what he recommends.

Quick question for you as well, what size rockers did you go with, the 3/8 stud or the 7/16th?

I was happy as can be with my LE2 setup... and still am. I just have a few bugs to work out, getting it tuned again, hoping for some better numbers, and then off to the track for a low 12 run.

Honestly you should be shooting for passes well into the 11's.

Are your track #'s with the same setup that made 400rwhp?

This should give you some inspiration, since it is the same cam, and I got to think this guy's DIY head porting is no comparison to the set you got. And NOTE all the HP robbing stuff he has, 9" with BIG gears, A4 with big stall too.

my '88 GTA.... LT1 swap.
this is the car's 8th pass i believe.... crappy launch.

-mildly ported heads (done by me)
-accel proram single plane, 1200cfm tb
