Here is a link to a good post, but this isnt the link i was talkin bout...

While this is technically true, going down a track, you will get MUCH cooler air and lots more of it than sitting strapped to a dyno with stagnant air, or if youre lucky, a fan giving you a little air.

Personally, my favorite myths are myths that something is a myth.

I'll call it getting more cool air then...Anyway, historically, with this dyno, cars trap 2 mph slower than at the track...getting more air may have nothing to do with it. It could just be a software thing. Either way, the test repeatedly showed a .2 / 2 mph improvement over the shorties, but only the track will tell for sure...

I believe that the Kooks made the car faster
because of the simple fact that the
easier it is for the engine to breathe,
the faster you're gonna be.

And as for the "ram air debate",
cars do dyno slightly higher
when the air inlet is isolated(cooler
than under hood) and a straight shot
into the engine.

I'm interested to hear how the car performs at the track when you go again.

Did it changed how the car sounds much??

Well, my butt dyno says its faster...Its got wicked mid and top end. And it sounds a little different than before. Someone had said once that LTs and Borlas don't sound too good and I think they are right to an extent. Its got a slightly different note to it and I'm not sure I like it yet. WOT is wicked, idle is also wicked, but part throttle cruising has some weird spots that are hard to explain...

Interesting that I should run into this post. I came on here looking for info on this same subject. I too am considering switching from SLP shorties to a long tube header. I think you're probably the first person I've seen post before/after results.

My combo consists of a heads/cam, stock bottom end package, so I suspect I wouldn't benefit from a longtube upgrade the way a stroker would. These are very interesting results. Thanks alot for sharing it with us.

big dave...The SLP shorties are 1 3/4" right? Then I guess you would not see enough gain to warrant the change. I had 1 5/8" shorties and a 2 1/2" Y-pipe which is why I expected to see something. The back to back 1/4 mile dyno blasts were very interesting, though. My non calibrated butt dyno says theres a gain, but that could be wishful thinking. We'll see at Capitol one of these Friday nights...Joe Overton was very confident that these things would make a substantial difference at the track. I am hoping for 11.20s at 120. I know I got 9-10 rwhp with the EWP mod, so we'll see what we see...

I didn't think it would be worth the expense. I do remember seeing your car at FBC when the motor was out. It sounds like a pretty stout combo.
I've gotten pretty bored with what I have now and I am actually considering a new combo that would possibly benefit from longtubes. I have a procharger that's been sitting in the closet fr the last few years.Even with the high compression I may be able to make the motor live long enough for a couple low 11 second passes. lol

Thanks, yeah its a pretty good combination of street and strip and durability. Thinking about it again I may have gone a wee bit bigger on the cam (current is a 226/234) but its got tons of throttle response and good mph. If I can get 11.20s out of it now, then I'll whittle away some weight to get a 10.9999 somehow...
