Kooks LT's and true duals
Kooks LT's and true duals
I finally have the $ for headers and I want to do it 1 time. I know that alot of guys are running Kooks now and I want to do it with true duals. 1) How do the collectors hook up? I thought of using the Summit or Jeg's X-PIPE KIT so what do I need to hook up to Kooks collectors? Are they a bolted flange or slip fit? 2)If I get the headers w/o egr and air fittings what do I need to do to eliminate these two. Is there an EGR block off? I hear that OBD1 cars won't set a code when you eliminate the A.I.R pump, is this true? If there is something that I'm missing please fill in the blanks.

Re: Kooks LT's and true duals
I don't have all the answers, but I'll I'll do the best on the ones I know. I have taken delivery of the stepped headers with 3 1/2 inch collectors. This is what I ordered. When Kook's went to build mine I was told the Kook's y-pipe will not fit the 3 1/2 " collectors. So I changed to 3" collectors. Whene the headers arrived they had 3 1/2" collectors and the y-pipe had been modified, nicely, to fit them. Oh well FYI.
The headers are slip fit collectors. When the y-pipe is ordered it come with 3 band clamps. There is no flange on the back of the y-pipe. Like you I plan on going true duals, but I don't have time to fab anything. all I have to do is weld a flange to the y-pipe and bolt it up to my cat back. As long as I don't butcher anything I figure I can sell it later.
I have had my AIR pump disconnected (95) for the las few months and have not thrown a code.
I have not removed the EGR yet so I don't know about that, but at the worse I can program it out. You will need a block off plate. I know Thunder sells them. All I need is one for the intake.
I have used the X-pipe on other cars. It will work with the Kook's. With enough time and money anything will fit anything. The X-pie comps with regular muffler clamps. I have never used them, because that many looks messy under the car. I have always butt welded the joints. Time consuming, but it looks good. That is why I am starting with the Y-pipe.
hope this helps

Re: Kooks LT's and true duals
I don't think it will. Assuming you order three inch collectors and go with a 3 inch X-pipe. I have not seen a 3 1/2" x-pipe at Jeg's or Summit. Someone else may sell them. You will have to have either have the headers or the X-pipe 45 degree bends swaged. The 45 degree bends may not be long enough. You may need to add some straight pipe to them depending where the X-pipe is located.

Re: Kooks LT's and true duals
Kooks are supposed to offer some of the best ground clearance. I was curious about the tubing being long enough also I guess I'll just have to see. I am prolly going to order the headers with the 3" collectors. So do you think the tubing from the x will slip in with a 3" collector? Also, what do you mean when you say I'll need the 45 bends swaged?
Re: Kooks LT's and true duals
I do not think a 3" X-pipe will slip in a 3" collector. When I say swaged I meen the pipe is expanded. In this case the 3" Outside Diameter pipe is expanded to be a 3" Inside diameter pipe so it will slip over a 3" OD pipe.
