ha, i though of sugesting this as the issue becase i have seen it before but thought it could not happen on an lt1 i have seen it on a few gm 6 cylinders. i thought due to the constuction of the lt1 balancer the outside ring would have compleetly come off if the rubber was gone or damaged enough to make thid noise. i am glad you found it and that it did not involve a compleet overhaul.
