I've got a 96 SS with the ram air intake.
I've been told that CAI will give the same performance if not more????????
Is this true???
Has anybody ever dynoed this??

i am a proud owner af a 97 ss and would never change my ram air intake i just think its the coolest thing slp ever did on my car i understand your the need for more power but for me i think the $ spent on a cai could go to other mods.

You get more hp from a CAI becuase the CAI is sucking in air, while stationary or moving. On a Ram Air setup you need to force the air into the engine to gain hp, therefore performance is near identical in the 1/4 mile, but hp numbers will differ. I would leave it alone. IMO the ram air on the TA's are the real ram air, due to the direct flow (straight line) into the intake unline the SS's which curl around to the intake. Its like the same affect as having the least amount of bends in your exhaust compared to straight pipes, the least amount curves equals more flow/hp.

I've seen dyno tests between a stock SS and one with the GM F-1 (SLP) CAI.
The CAI made more power and torque.
Reason being, the SS intake soaks up heat from the intake manifold because it sits on top.

A CAI WILL outperform the stock SS RA setup. Main reasons are due to losses from the bends in the piping and heat soak from sitting ontop of the intake.
But seriously folks. You are going to hear many say that the CAI, apparently any CAI, will out perform the scam air, but you rarely, if ever see any numbers.
The CAI (Cold Air Intake) is a misnomer. The air is not "cold". It is just an induction system like the Scam Air.
Take your air box and get some heat shield material and use Super Adhesive and glue the material to the bottom of the box. And put some on the plenum where you can.
This should reduce some of the heat sink from the intake.
Throw on a K&N filter and call it good.JMHO

Keep your current SS setup, It's not worth the cost to change it. +/- the HP

Even if I was going to get a CAI I would keep the stock setup.
I do plan on keeping the car for as long as I can and later on down the road I'll want to put it all back to stock.
Next time my F-body club has a dyno day I'll strap on a CAI and compare dyno numbers.
