Ok, i have no idea but check this site out, or check out the K&N website...
http://www.accessconnect.com/knairinject.htm

That shows you can get a new generation 2, or the old generation 1, i dont know what the difference is at all though..from what horsepower gains etc..

the difference with the two generations is: this may not comply with the LT1 but. the generation 1 is a bigger cone shaped filter that goes on the factory air duct. the generation 2 is the cold air kit that we are all fimilar with. NOW if you speak to K+N they will tell you that they are both technically cold air kits becasue the 1st gen has an open element, so does the 2nd gen but the 2nd goes down into the fender or where ever it may be depending on application. when you order one and you speak to a tech make sure that you specify which one you want.

The Generation 2 just has a heat sheild added, the other kit they sell that adds a open element is a Filter charger kit.

Does the heat shield give you any added performance, if so how much?

I highly doubt you'll see any gain from just the addition of a heat shield. Unless of course, you have an exothermic nuclear reaction taking place under your hood, raising the temp in the engine bay.
