k&n FIPK concerns

hey everyone
i searched for this in the boards but really couldn't find anything.
I'm about to buy a k&n fip kit. I am concerned about water though. It even says on the install instructions be be careful in wet conditions because of the filter being mounted kinda low (97 stock LT-1). anyone had any problems with this? this car is my daily driver. Is there something better than the k&n?

thanks in advance

Re: k&n FIPK concerns

unless you drive through small streams and the like on your way to work, there is really nothing to worry about. You would have water coming INTO the car through the firewall before it went up the intake. (With the exception of those genisuses who drive through large puddles at full throttle.)

As long as you have the stock air dam screwed back together after you install the FIPK then water is a small concern for everyday driving.

I only drive the Formula in good weather, so my air dams are removed for a little better airflow.

Re: k&n FIPK concerns

....I have a home made CAI on mine, K& N that was a 7" diameter x 9"
long with 4" intake. It hangs down there and I've never had a
problem with water. I am right now in the process of fabbing up another
K & N that is 7" x 18"! It'll hang down a little further, not much though
as most of the extra 9" will be on the top side.

I live in Florida and drive through heavy rains and water constantly... no problems.

You just need to worry if you drive through about 1.5' or so of water... basically a small lake

Re: k&n FIPK concerns

believe it or not, i had a buddy hydro-lock (what happens when you try to compress water instead of air) a stock ls1 on the highway. but he got into a huge amount of standing water in a construction zone and kept in the throttle. seized the motor, and was replaced under warrenty.

moral of the story, it can happen no matter where the filter is, just dont be dumb, and if the car dies, dont try to restart it if you think it's full of water.

Re: k&n FIPK concerns

It's a great CAI. I've had my K&N FIPK for years, and never had a problem. Just keep the plastic access door closed underneath.

It will be fine.

Re: k&n FIPK concerns

....ut-oh, and my warrantee ran out years ago.... Oh, the 18" K& N that
I have has a 1/4" x 1" stud on top which is metal {actually the way it's
installed is the bottom} so with a bracket attached it won't fall off...
Bill.... ps, I'm off to get my rear brake line redone at a brake shop today
{another fitting put on the end of the line for the rear brakes}. I'm re-
moving my ABS, my advice to anyone wanting to do this is to not think
twice before doing it but think THREE times. Its a major hassle....
