I am excited. I have a OBDII connector and have a OBDI pcm behind it.
I have finally broke down and purchased my cable..

Does anyone here have any tips or tricks, software that they like to use to get a beginner off the ground?

Of course I just want to start by leanring how to check for codes, and also do some real time logging...

I like tunercats to tune and datamaster for logging. Datamaster is free for the 1st 20 logs, then $100 to purchase (unless it changed recently). You can pause the log as many times as you want, or just turn the engine off and it will pause itself.

 

The software that is completely free is FREESCAN and it works pretty well I have had no problems with it. I use FreeScan for looking at data and codes myself. If I want to send a data file to someone for help then I have DataMaster since most people tend to use it more. DM gives you 20 free logs but after that you must purchase.

I also have injuneer's link above bookmarked and it helps you break down what everything means and how they may relate to each other, very helpful. I also went a step further and downloaded TunerCat and WinFlash for tuning purposes. It helped me to be able to look at tuning files and pull my own pcm tune out to see what I have or what problems may be there. I haven't tried any actual tuning yet, other then reflashing a stock tune on my pcm. Lots of things to learn and it will take a good while before you may be comfortable enough to do some things.
