just killed 2 opti's in less than 150 miles (long, but please help)

I posted on here about a week ago about something in my opti breaking and the car not starting. I though I just got a bad opti or something. So I got a new one from DAL and it has maybe 20 miles on it and it went out again. I don't know what is wrong with it. It's like when it's brand new it runs great. And then it keeps getting harder and harder to start. Then it starts backfiring every now and then. and then all of the sudden the RPM's drop to 500, with popping, knocking, pinging, and backfiring. The exact same thing that happened last time. When you try to start the car, you can here the spark ticking in the opti, like it's grounding out. (The coil has spark but plugs dont.) Does anyone know why this is happening???

I raced it tonight and I though it was kinda dissappointing but I think it could have been the opti holding me back.

60 ft....1.89
1/8th...8.70 @ 78 MPH

And that's with an 396 all forged, home ported heads, 58mm TB, CSI, Jet-hot LT's, TH400 tranny with 3200 stahl, and a DANA 60 with 3.54 gears.

Does anyone know how much this car is worth as is. All that it needs is an opti and I don't know why they keep breaking??
I also have the factory wheels and a set(4) TT 2's, 2 of which have ET streets. I would also include the stock parts from the rebuild (all internal motor parts) and stuff like the clutch, flywheel, 6 speed tranny, DS, and reat end. Do you think $15,000 is asking too much??? The tranny is built to handle 1200HP, with a COAN coverter and VB, B&M Quick silver the rear is 35 spline and Trac-loc, all STRANGE parts, Jet-hot's with black 2000 coating, 42lb injectors, PCMforless programming, and all the other stuff that I'm missing. I easially have over 20,000 invested but I'm just tired of trying to figure out all the electrical stuff. I want a carb.

I reall want to get rid of it. I can't stand working on it and one of my friends is selling a 1967 RS/SS camaro with a 396 for cheap

P.S. Does it cost anything to advertise my car on this site??

Check the dowel pin length on the cam. If it is too long, it will destroy the opti in quick fashion.

There is also a thread floating around about bad GM optis.

My stock one was .650", but I think it has been published to be .685". This is from the face of the cam to the end of the protruding dowel. Most Comp Cams of late have come with much longer dowels that would be way too long.

Did you replace the coil? If not try to replace it and see if that helps..

My car did THIS SAME EXACT THING 2 weeks ago, I threw away the cheap coil that I had in it from autozone and got a Borg Warner one from Pep Poys and it been working great since. I thought the opti had gotten wet cuz it was raining when the sputtering happened but since I replaced the coil it has rained like 3 days in a row and I still have not had the same problem yet so I am pretty sure the opti was OK and the coil was the culprit. Like I said the new coil has been in my car for 2 weeks and approximately 1000 miles without the same issues coming back.

Mabee you should check that first. Its cheap enough too.

Hope that helps,
Claude

read my thread on the dead optis. I got 2 bad right out of the box. I actually put my old one back on with 56k on it and as long as its not hot it starts and runs great. When it is hot it doesnt wanna start right and thats why I replaced it at first. Im glad I didnt have to pay for a one. A buddy that works at an auto parts store had somebody buy one and we used his number to order mine saying that his was bad a month after he got it. Im about to order #3 tommorrow. Im getting tired of doing this!

like I said read what I said about them

shoebox congrats on post #10,000
