Angry just fired up 396, knocking from oil pan!

I just finished installing my new combination motorsports 396 in and there is a loud knocking noise coming from the oil pan. You can actually put your hand on the pan and feel the impacts. I have the canton pan on with the windage screen and the crank scraper. Could this knocking be the rods or crank hitting the screen or scraper?

My 396 has a callies dragonslayer crank with 3.875 stroke, Eagle ESP H-Beam 5.85" rods

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Man thats rough, dont run it anylonger pull that pan and check for contact marks its very possible thats it especially with it being a stroker. Are you getting good oil pressure? did you preprime it? How long after initial startup did you notice pressure on your gage?

Yes I primed it with the priming tool. On initial start oil pressure rose to 60 psi almost immediately and then stayed between 60 and 70 psi. Does anynone know if I have to massage the scraper or scraper for these rods with the canton pan?

There was another thread in here today about clearance issues with a 396 (even with a Canton pan). It seems they are tough to overcome. At least you should be able to see where the problem is. I would not run it too much so not to risk getting any metal in your brand new engine. Hope you have good luck in getting it ironed out.

Hey Sharp, I don't know who you bought the pan from but you need to hammer down the scraper on the pan. I got mine from Nick at Nu-Tek and they did it for me prior to shipping. Sorry to hear about it. Good luck.

I'm 99% sure thats it. I was told my 383 would hit the scraper so I'm sure your 396 definately will. Good luck and let us know.

yes, thats all that it was. no damage to the rods or crank. I can't wait to see how the motor does too. It definitely needs a tuning . yes the block was clearanced by combination. Looks real nice. I put a couple pictures of the motor on webshots. Thanks for the help.
