Talking Just Did The I.c.m. Mod

today i finally did the icm mod and it workes great!
i really can feel the difference and the power seems to stay up there when the car is at normal operating range.
i really didnt think it was gonna make that big of a difference but i was wrong..

im gonna see if i can relocate the icm and coil assembly somewhere else though like maybe the fender wwell or something, i think it still is too close and getting to much heat.

sooo has anyone here moved this thing to like the fender or something?
is it worth the trouble?

and finally, since i moved the icm and coil and it made such a big difference should i think about replacing these soon? like the heat maybe has caused some internal problem with them.

thanks in advance
jim

Basically tou just space the coil and icm off the head using washers so it doesnt absorb heat as quickly, thus operating better. Quick and easy to do.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to give that a shot when I change my plugs and wires in a couple of weeks.

You want to keep the coil wire as short as possible. Moving the coil to the fender will make it longer.

The mod can be found here.

I did it too , it didnt solve my knock and miss problem (I didnt expect it to) but its nice to have it not hugging the hot head like stock .

Re: Just Did The I.c.m. Mod

Seems to me that the ICM actually uses the head as a heatsink. The ICM generates quite a bit of heat itself...wouldn't it overheat if you space it from the head?

The ICM makes no where near as much heat as the head.

and the ICM has a heat sync connected to it.

Re: Just Did The I.c.m. Mod

I don't know if anyone else had this problem with this mod, but I had
a bad run condition after doing it, but tracked it down to I put he ground wires up on the stud part, after I removed and put them back between the
head and the washers the car ran fine again.

Don't know it may just be mine but if you have the same just move the
ground wires to ground on the head.

I also have replacement studs( I think they are alum. so that could be the issue)

Re: Just Did The I.c.m. Mod

thanks for all the replys on this, for those who dont know what the mod is, shoebox has posted the link and his link is exactly what i did to mine.

it really does make a big difference on the surging and such that i was having, im still shocked that it made it run perfect

anyone here who has that surging problem on the 1994 car just HAS to do this cooling mod, it really does work sweet!!!

Re: Just Did The I.c.m. Mod

I think when I bought my new ICM, I tried driving around with it just hanging out in the engine and it made no difference. But you guys almost have me curious enough to space it out from the head permanently.

It's just that there is heatsink compound on there. That's an obvious sign that GM intended the head to be a heatsink for the ICM. Regular SBCs with the ICM under the dist are the same way...
