Just changed plugs...
it is much easier on a rack, im a chevy mechanic and ive done it both ways. the ideal way to do it at home though is put the car on drive ons or stands on the frame and use a hoist to hold the engine, ive seen to many fall of jack stands. id be too chicken to do it your way again. i was young and dumb when i did it your way the first time. now i have a hoist and if i didnt i would go rent one before i did it again. but thats just me. if you didnt die, congrats. for anyone else who is going to tackle this job in their garage rent a hoist its just makes sense. $40 at AZ is better than the risk any day.
