Thumbs up Just bought a 1994 Z28!

Greetings all,

I just bought a 1994 Camaro Z28 with 90,000 miles on it. The engine seems to be in very good condition, except for needing a tuneup. I got into it really hard just to see what kind of power it had and if it would hesitate at all, and I didn't notice any problems. It's also got some amazing power. I won't be pushing it too hard until I'm certain I've checked over everything I should because I don't want to turn a small problem into a really big one.

It does, however, appear to have some sort of aftermarket exhaust pipes. The cat and the muffler appear stock, but the pipes definitely look different than other stock 1994's I've seen. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing as of yet. I'm very excited about easing my way into the Z28/LT1 community.

My question for you is, what areas should I be examining at this point to be completely certain my LT1 is back into tip-top shape? What kind of techniques should I use? I think I'm sort of asking for a "LT1's for dummies" book, but I'm very interested in hearing everyone's opinion. It would be most appreciated!

-- EDIT --
When I posted the link to my pictures, please ignore the pictures that were in the "dave" directory. I moved them, but everyone thought my Z28 was Scoobysnax's Z28! There are just a few pictures in the folder now... Sorry Scooby, but at least they like your car objectively!

Welcome to the board, That looks like a clean 94Z, You even have an aftermarket Hard Intake on it. A few thins to look for, Oil leak at back of manifold (they all do it sooner or later), Slow power window motors, You don't really want to spray water under the hood to clean motor beacause the Opti-Spark ( Distributor) sits right underneath the waterpump and can get wet which will cause your car to not run or miss real bad. If you do a search you will find all kinds of info, Good Luck

First of all welcome to the board and nice look car...gotta love black....

They're good cars if they're taken care of...if it needs a tune up it'll either cost you time or money...plugs/wires are a bit of a pain to do, but they only need to be done every 90 or 100k so thats the good thing...unless you foul one up...best thing to do is get the car on a lift (if you haven't already) and check for leaks, and see if there are any suspension problems, things loose etc...if it was well taken care of you shouldn't have any problems.

Guys thats my car! He's a friend of mine and he had pics of my car on his website. He fixed it. It is a beautiful car, Purple Pearl Metallic with an aftermarket wings west wing. No problems at all. One thing I noticed is that his cooling fans come on about 5 seconds after startup. No SES light, no hesitation, Until... last night on his way home on the highway it popped on. I knew just from the fans coming on that there was a fault in the system somewhere, but the SES confirms it. I know you guys are gonna say get it scanned but in the meantime. What do you think it is? I was thinking EGR or O2's. Thats about the only thing that I could think of it being on the highway like that...

If it aint broke...

Just make sure the oil and coolant is up to snuff and your oil pressure is ok.

I wouldn't mess with it much other than the maint. stuff including belts, hoses, plugs, etc.

That way, if something goes awry you know it isn't something you screwed up.

Then as you get used to it and monitor the performance and sounds, you will be better prepaired to deal with problems, plus you will have time to learn from the owners on this board as to what to do and what not to do. JMHO
