Question JetHot LTs and odor

Is it normal for a header install to cause a prolonged bad smell inside of the car? I was told at the time I had my long tubes put on that they would be burning grease for awhile. I'm not sure how long 'awhile' should be because it has been several months and I've driven halfway across the country, but it still stinks inside my car.

My dad thinks it smells kind of like burning anti-freeze, but the fluid level is not down at all, so I am kind of stumped. The smell seems to come in through the air conditioner vents after I get on the throttle pretty hard, and it was never there before the headers...

Do you JetHots have AIR fittings? If so, the EGR connection may be leaking since this is close to the firewall. My EGR connection was leaking and had the exact same symtom you are describing.

I didn't really notice any smell inside the car after my install.

Re: JetHot LTs and odor

I think I have the same smell with my Jet-Hots. To me it kinda smells like a capichino or something. Sweet smelling, so my guess if coolant, but my coolant level never drops.

Not too long agao I read a post where someone had the same problem. And someone else replied saying, that generaly, the smell is there (for whatever reason) because of the headers.

I still don't know what it is.. but I don't think it's hurting anything.. so I'm ok with it.

Re: JetHot LTs and odor

It actually does smell a lot like caramel. It gets pretty strong particularly after revving, which I think is strange. I have also been getting an off and on SES that I have assumed is a result of the decreased back pressure. An EGR leak might be behind this as well.

At the same time, it sounds like some exhaust is leaking out up front, almost like a ticking sound when it idles. Could this also be a symptom of the same thing?

I got the same problem but without the flange leaks. Im switching over to Nickle plated longtubes, maybe that will end the smell, @least ill have longtubes now

Re: JetHot LTs and odor

When my EGR connection was leaking it caused a ticking/fluttering sound at idle and progressively worse when under load and acceleration. I fixed the leak by wraping the connection with some aluminum foil tape (muffler tape). No more smell and ticking.

I have the same smell! I thought it was the heater core leaking. It smells kinda like antifreeze.

Re: JetHot LTs and odor

it could be the plug wire's or the heater box that protrudes through the firewall on the passenger side.. it can get hot enough to burn that..
