jegs.com didn't want to sell me a 160 degree t-stat

Hey guys, I just called Jegs.com to ask which model hypertech 160 degree t-stat went with my 96 z28, and the tech they put me on the phone with was like, what type of mods are you running in your car... I said it was basically stock, (cat-back, CAI...etc) He then said that it woulnd't be a good idea to switch to a 160 degree t-stat because i would need to get a custom computer chip, or custom tuning because with my mods the car would be running to cold for the catalytic converters to handle, the computer would lean out the a/f mixture, and i could do very expensive damage...

I dont think that guy knew what he was talking about... how would the coolant temp affect the Cats? And how does the computer take coolant temp into account for a/f mixture? Most of you guys run the 160 degree t-stats and I hear they work great. I am curious to hear what you guys have to say about this. It sounded to me like the Jegs.com guy wanted to sell me a performance chip

sorry for the long post,
Matt

Without a fan switch the only place you will see a difference is on the hiway. Its true your cats need to heat up but the thermostat would not affect them enough to make them in operable (expecially with the air pump).

Interesting what that guy said, many guys run them without the problems you mentioned.

Just buy it.

The only thing you need to have any benefit from a 160 thermostat is either a manual fan switch, a hypertech power programmer, or have someone tune your PCM for it. I just bought the $60 switch and put it in and you can also just wire it yourself but I liked the idea of the switch plugging into the existing harness as opposed to cutting and splicing wires.

Exactly that is why when comp tells me that that cam wont work and is way to huge, or jegs tells me that part wont work with my setup. I say "how about you sell me the part i am want to spend my hard earned money on and keep the advise to yourself"

Hmmmm. Granted a good salesman will be quick to sell what you ask for, take the cash and run with it, this one guy showed some kind of concern for the well being for your LT1. Nice, however It would be a good idea if he knew more about LT1's though and therefore perhaps we could guide his lost soul to our website for supreme knowledge. (grin). I believe this particular rep was thinkin about the car never going into closed loop operation, the puter keeping the fuel rich at all times and eventually pluggin the cold running Cats. Anyway, I agree with many on the fact that there are many autoparts Jockeys that dont know jack yet they try to humiliate you infront of others as it happened to me one to many times. Recently while I was trying to buy the LT4 knock module. One thing to remember, some of them are Street guys/gals who were hired and trained in an enviroment where they know part numbers but they are not Certified ASE mechanics and probably dont even know how does the Alternator produces electricity.

I learned my lesson already. I dont even trust certified mechanics...one told me he would not guarantee his front aligment work unless I agreed to do the rear too... I told him the rear is not adjustable and unless it has bent parts there is nothing to adjust... he completely disagreed with me and refused the Job. Talk about ad insult to Injury.

By the way at what temp does our lt1 go into closed loop?? or is it temp driven at all?? time driven??? I dont know myself... anyone?

Thanks in advance.
