If you've got all four wheels off the car, it's pretty easy to slide a couple of them under your subframe connectors to give you a bit of safety margin....

My car has been on jackstands for 4 months now. It is still solid as a rock. No worries if done correctly!!!!!

Colin, I'm not sure what ur advocating with this? Surely you would crawl under ur car without jackstands in place would u? So the only alternatives are not going under the car or having someone else do it?
Hey tanmanski,
I'm not scared of going under a car. If I was, I surely would not be putting an LT1 in my '72 Vega. I was referring to the fact that some people just toss a jackstand underneath their car and think that they're safe. Jackstands CAN kill you, if you're stupid enough to not check before you get underneath.

I prefer to use an old set of rims for just this purpose. I jack up the car with my floor jack and place a rim under each wheel. If the car is not high enough, I 'step' up the car and each time place wood blocks underneath the rims until I get to the desired height.

I've also done the same thing but with the frame of my truck resting on a piece of wood (to protect the frame) with rims underneath the wood. It's more sturdy than with the truck in park, and much safer.

Again, I was just saying that if you're stupid you can still kill yourself. Oh, and never put the jackstand 'half' underneath the jackstand. That's probably how that guy killed himself. I always, always make sure the whole vehicle is centered on my supports, I vigorously shake the car and I get in and out once to see whether the car wobbles.

Later!
Colin
