Jackstands on all 4 corners?

I am taking my calipers to be powdercoated, but right now only the back end is on jackstands. I really need to take all 4 calipers in at once, so is it ok to have all 4 corners on jackstands? I'm not sure that seems too safe. Also, I'm gonna have to bleed the brakes when I put the calipers back on, so how do I do that when the car is on completely up on stands? I'm a little confused!?!

Anyone with any tips? Thank you everyone!

Jeremy

As long as you have stands that are rated for the weight of the car, and they are positioned correctly; there is no reason you cant have it on jack stands.

I had my car up on 4 stands as well when I did my tranny, shouldn't be a problem.

ok, thanks guys. I've never even used jackstands until the other day!

So, would it be ok to have someone get in the car and pump the brakes for bleeding the brake lines?

I don't trust em. Don't use em. Don't even bother with them if I were you.

Check out the following link for proof. I don't usually link, but I think this is somewhat an important thread..

If your going to use Jack stands do the following:
#1. Ensure they're placed right and the frame is properly in contact with each stand.
#2. Chock the wheels as you do it.
#3. Shake it violently once its up on the stands.
#4. Place the floorjack just lightly under the corner you're working on as a last resort/backup.
#5. Don't go under in anyway until 1,2,3,4 are done.

If you've done that you should be fine... Just don't be an idiot and start using 30lb mallet if your under there on something

I always have the hydrolic floor jack up under the corner im working on just touching the frame. Don't rely on the floor jack, they can easily fail.

I should add that to #1: by in "contact" i mean with the frame "AND" the ground (ie they're not tipping).

Mine has been up in the air on all 4 stands this winter (4 months) and no problems. I work under it every week-end without worries.

Stay out from under it, and use a floor jack under the end your working on for a safety catch (up against the pumpkin in the rear or K-member in the front). Better yet use two floor jacks, one on each end. Especially since you don't need to get under the car for calipers. I have seen cars on 4 jackstands and they seem safe. I peronally wouldn't bet my life on it though.

EDIT: Though it won't work in the situation that started this thread, when I need all 4 up I use good ramps. I usually leave a jack or jack stand in as a backup to that as well. I'm paranoid, I know, but I have no intention of getting injured/killed under my car.

Colin, I'm not sure what ur advocating with this? Surely you would crawl under ur car without jackstands in place would u? So the only alternatives are not going under the car or having someone else do it?
If so, gotta say I disagree. Good quality jackstands, properly set up & used are very safe......unless you are under there trying to break loose a rusted bolt with a 0.75" breaker bar........I always use power tools on rusted fasteners under the car, impact wrench, sawz-all, just anything but huge muscle leverage.
Just use some common sense & forethought, you'll be fine.

I just read that thread posted ... I've never heard of jackstands failing. I know I use the "Made in China" Wal-Mart stands as well, and routinely have cars up on all four.

I'll definitely take to heart the back-up method with floor jacks. I have a low throw and longer throw that I use depending on how high up I need the car. I guess I'll use those for back-up in the future.

My heart was beating pretty fast reading that, especially thinking about the times I've had the car up high on four stands. Thanks for posting the link.

I use block of woods, backed up by jack stands and a floor jack. Better be safe than sorry.
