Istalling heads and got oil on new 1074 gaskets

Hey all,

oil got on the gasket before I had a chance to tighten it down and it has soaked in but not all the way to the other side of the gasket.

Is this ok or should I use a new gasket now that I am ready to torque it down?

If it were me, I would probably use a new gasket.

If it were me, I'd err on the side of caution

There, that should make the decision perfectly clear!

IMO, surgically cleaning the deck and head surfaces just to throw on a gasket with oil on it doesn't make sense.

Yep, 58 views and 3 suggestions. 2 against one. Looks like you'll be making a road trip.

I've had friends at work clamp down a head with oil still leaking out of it and not have problems, but if it was me I'd probably use a new one unless it was terribly inconvenient. I don't even pull the gaskets out until I'm ready to set them on the block in order to avoid questions of "will this work or am I going to have to do it all over again?"

Will it hurt or won't it? Who knows for sure.

It's the ol' risk vs. reward scenario.

Areas are soaked with oil. I would say 10% of the surface area is.

well get a new one then. Not worth risking it considering all the work

I had oil seeping out from under my head when installing the gaskets from oiling the threads of the bolts.

No clue if it hurt anything... can't keep the POS running long enough!

If it happened to my head gaskets I'd spray them with brake cleaner; but I use Cometic MLS gaskets.

Just buy a new one for peace of mind!

I'd get a new gasket. Think about how much you will regret it if it blows and you have to tear the motor apart again.
