comes to mind:
How about the different dashboard from '96 to '97. Do the gauges still read correctly?

Only the tachometer and the speedometer/odometer are driven by the PCM. The gauges are wired to the appropriate sensor (oil, coolant, fuel), or circuit (volts).

Re: Interchangeability PCM ˋ96 - ˋ97

Thanks!
The reason why I wan't to know for sure is that I wanted to buy a PCM from a '96 for my '97 and have it programmed right in the US and then have it shipped to my place over the pond. It would be bad if the PCM arrives at my place and it wouldn't work in the end.

To ensure the speedometer/odometer is calibrated correctly, you need to tell the programmer your rear axle ratio and tire diameter.

Good point! where there different axle ratios on the automatics?
btw. Solomon is taking care of it. Curious about the changes. Hopefully I get the PCM soon...

Re: Interchangeability PCM ˋ96 - ˋ97

The A4 cars had either a 2.73:1 rear axle (base, RPO code GU2), or 3.23:1 (performance axle GU5).

Stock tire sizes were either 235/55-16 (26.18”) or 245/50-16 (25.65”). SS coupe option tires were 275/45-17 (25.66”)..

Re: Interchangeability PCM ˋ96 - ˋ97

Got the PCM last friday and installed it on sunday.
Test drive was fine without any problems!
Next thing I have to do: buy block off plates for the EGR...
