Integrated underdrive pulley/harmonic balancer

I finally order ASP's integrated pulley/balancer (or is it a dampner?). I knew if I ever got a pulley I would get this one to save some weight and get rid of the stock balancer/dampner.

Anyway, my question is, does this install any differently than a normal pulley, outside of not putting the balancer/dampner back on?

Has anyone put one of these on? Are the bolts included the right length (after doing a search I saw that some pulleys had bolts that were too long).

Any tips on the R&R?

I used to have the ASP integrated damper/pulley. Goes on exactly the same way as the stock damper. The holes are spaced unevenly, so it only goes on the hub one way (unless you somehow manage to force it). As I recall (I installed mine in 1995) there is an arrow on it for TDC, just like the stocker, and it uses the stock bolts. After you get the bolts in, just check to make sure the bolts aren't sticking too far out of the back of the hub. They shouldn't be, but its worth checking, because if they stick out too far they will hit the "cap" on the Opti.

OK, before I finish this, I don't want to make a dumb mistake.

What does the balancer look like? Is it different from the "hub"? If not, how would I tell the two apart?

Once I remove the pulley, then what?

Thanks for the help so far, Fred.

I have this same pulley, I also have the alt pulley as well.

It is a nice setup, it is just a pain to remove it if you ever have to remove it again, say for an Opti replacement.

The hub is what you are going to bolt the new ASP "balancer" pulley to.

What does the stock balancer look like? Is it behind the pulley? I just want to make sure I remove everything I'm supposed to, and nothing I'm not supposed to.

Thanks!

The stock "balancer" is actually a "damper", and its located on the front of the crankshaft. And it is an "integrated" pulley and damper. Grooves for the serpentine belt on the outside, and the rubber damper ring almost inisible between the inner and outer 1/2's of the pulley.

Hm, so does this mean with most underdrive pulleys you have to put the entire stock pulley back on too? The stock dampner is actually integrated with the stock pulley? Wow!

OK, so this means that when I remove the stock pulley I'll be removing the stock dampner at the same time?

Then I can just put the new integrated ASP pulley/dampner on, and put the bolts back in.

Is there a need to remove the center crank bolt at all during this process?

The stock balancer IS the damper. See Injuneer's above post. I have the piggy-back March pulley and no dont take out the crank bolt. Theres three bolts in that diagram Fred posted, remove those pop off the balancer, put the new one on with the same bolts. I recommend loosening the bolts while the belt is still on so you're not spinning the crank around. I did that and it was annoying.

you may need a puller to get the stock dampener off. mine was rusted to the hub, I ended up fanagling a 3 jaw puller in there to pull it off.

you'll be slapping yourself in the forehead when you go out and actually look at the car, there's not much to it. Might want to try looking at it before posting so you get an idea of what people are talking about.

good luck.

Correct.. with MOST UD Damper/pulleys you also use the stock damper/pulley[piggyback style... also the reason for the 'too long' bolts?]
IF you actually have an INTEGRATED damper/pulley [like my older March] then you REPLACE the stock damper/pulley with the new one...
I am not familiar with the ASP damper/pulley.. do you have a link to it?

Just be SURE that it IS a damper [many people are running around with just a UD pulley, thinking that they always REPLACE the stock one... not so..] not just a piggyback pulley

No reason to touch the center crank bolt.. that holds the HUB on[hub is what the damper/pulley bolts to with 3 bolts]

I used just the underdrive pulley and me being a dumba$$ didn't put the balancer/damper back on over it. Oh yeah I snapped my timing chain 1000 miles later......don't make that mistake.

Mtrhds94Z,

Yes, my ASP is an integrated version. I got it because I didn't want to be ADDING extra weight when I got an underdrive pulley. It's model # 945100 if you want to look it up. It's advertised as a 23% underdrive pulley/harmonic balancer.

I always thought the stock setup was two separate pieces. So when I heard people saying that you put the stock balancer back on for the normal underdrives, that it was a separate piece from the stock pulley. Now I know even the stock piece is integrated.

Anyhow, I got it finished up. Removed the old pulley and put the new one on. Stock bolts worked fine.

I needed a 3-claw puller to get the old one off... and had to remove both fans to use it. But it worked!

The Goodyear belt that ASP lists fit perfectly too.

Thanks for the help, everyone!
