Intake Manifold Question

Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to go pull my intake so I can fix the notorious manifold leak (wish me luck). Anyway, I don't have a torque wrench that reads in lb/in. Here's my question, if I use my regular torque wrench to initially tighten the bolts, what should I tighten them to? I'm thinking like lowest setting on the wrench (10 lb) would work. Any other suggestions (besides going to buy a lb/in torque wrench) would be greatly appreciated. I know that the final torque should be 35 lb/ft.

Thanks all

You need ft/lb not ft/in as far as I know.

I've done it on 3 cars with no problems.

12 lb. in. = 1 lb. ft., so 6 lb. ft. would be good for the first pass.

Make sure you start from the middle intake bolts and work your way out too the end when torqueing.

Thanks guys. I just got done pulling my fuel rails and TB and I noticed the inside of the manifold is dripping wet with gas. I think that my fuel pressure regulator is busted cause when I layed the rails down, the AFPR began leaking where the vacuum line from the manifold plugs into it. Also, I checked the intake all around with a mirror and flash light and I can't find any leaks (guess I lucked out huh). Looks like Aeromotive is going to give me a new regulator.

Thanks again guys.

when i had my car on the lift i noticed oil driping down the drivers side to the bottom of the tranny pan.im just guessing its either the manifold or the oil pressure sending unit.so i got my new sending unit from cromer the other day and intake man gaskets and am going to tackel the job in a couple weeks.

Good luck with it. I thought mine was going out cause the idle has gotten progressively crappier and I keep smelling gas when I try to start it. Guess I'm just smelling gas that's seeping around the AFPR. Oh well, a new one will be here tomorrow afternoon.

Wow, you're the first other person I've heard about with this problem. My old '85 Iroc had TPI and has the same type fuel reg. as LT1's. I had starting problems and a backfire issue with it and couldn't figure out what was wrong. I started pulling hoses and stuff to find out what was going wrong and when I pulled the hose to the FPR it shot out gas!!! Ended up the diaphram inside it somehow just deteriorated and I had the same fuel sitting in the manifold as you have! We're both lucky nothing ever caught fire.

Good luck with the fix. I did my manifold leak about 6 months ago (along with pressure sender) and I still get a drop or two randomly, but it's not "pouring" like it was before. The best advice I can give you is be very patient with the RTV beads you run, those are the most important! I've got a pic from mine here: http://community.webshots.com/photo/...91603412aTjZee

Good luck.

Kyle
