Intake Manifold 101

I have a 97 z28 , and i think my intake manifold is leaking just a lil bit. Im wondering since im gonna be ripping it off, should i go ahead an replace it with a aftermarket one , port the stock , or just leave it alone??? i have a few mods already done like cai, 1.6rr with LT4 springs, and Jet Hot Lts. Would I gain to benefit anything if i did port/ replace it???

Re: Intake Manifold 101

The stock intake is pretty good hence there are no readily available reasonably priced upgrades to be had. I know the intake was a tried and true mod on gen1s but is not here. I give you credit though, you asked the right question rather than asking how to put an intake you ASSumed was an upgrade but in reality is not like SO SO SO VERY MANY do. Really seems to be a heavy wave of these questions the last few weeks though a magazine run an article on intakes for the gen1 or LS1 or something that is bringing this to the surface again?

You might consider some minor de-burring while you have the manifold off. For example; on my LT1 intake where they machined the holes for the injectors, there were some small machining burrs on the inside of the intake runners. I used a die-grinder w/ rotary file to de-burr those areas and also smooth-out the inside of the runners near the port openings. I also machined-out the ventura openings for a 58mm TB and de-burred inside that area. Even if your car doesn't go faster, you'll feel better knowing those areas in the intake are cleaned-up.

I also had the intake powdercoated with silver vein and it looks really great! That powdercoating really improved the overall appearance of the engine, as the OEM intake aluminum casting is very dull and ugly.
