installing starter for header install

Im very nervous about removing the starter for my upcoming Pacesetter
Header install on a 97 LT1 camaro

Do I need a GM fork tool to line the teeth back up correctly?
are there shims to worry about or does it just unbolt and bolt back in
with no problems?

Re: installing starter for header install

Mine didn't have any shims at all, if yours do make sure you put them back in the right place when you reinstall the starter. It's just 2 bolts holding it on the bell housing. Remember to disconnect the cable at the starter first after you disconnect the battery before removing the starter.

Get the two bolts loose enough that you can take them off by hand and support the starter as you remove them so no nasty surprise drops by the starter when you take that last bolt out.

When reinstalling, get the bolts started first before putting the socket to either one of them. That's about it, one of the simplier things you can re and re on these cars.

werd
There are no tricks at all to this process, two monkeys with wiffle ball bats could do this job. I did not even remove the wires except for the battery cable.
Does that help.

The more starter installation documents i read, the more complicated it seemed to be

Can anyone post the install doc for the headers?

Re: installing starter for header install

The install docs.from Pacesetter for the headers are not very helpful as they very vague. I did a search of previous posts and found plenty of info. that helped alot more. As for the starter, it is as simple as removing the wires and two long bolts.

Re: installing starter for header install

Most starters are not shimmed and it only takes 2 bolts to get it out. It's a real easy reinstall so don't sweat it. The older Chevy small blocks were a PITA to get the starter shimmed and lined up right, the LT1 is great!
