Installing headers got a Q

So far so good, only got a Q as far as what to do with the curved metal rod to the alternator coming up from the manifold bolt. I bought stage 8 locking bolts, and to reuse that rod to the alternator i need a bolt with a stud on the end. Can i leave that mount off and be ok? Or should i just reuse that one stud? Thats it so far, manifolds are almost off, 1 bolt on one side 3 bolts on the other and they are out. Done for the day due to no more daylight, got a late start. I was intimidated with all the stories ive heard but so far everything is going very well.

Im also not sure on exactly what needs to be blocked off with plates. Does anyone have a site with pics of what ill need. Does anyone sell pre made block off plates??

I got MSD cut to fit wires for the LT1 and a moroso over the valve cover kit for center bolt covers. I was gonna order the kit from thunder but i like the MSD wires and they had em at the shop i got some other stuff at.

Last but not least i got the Mr Gasket exaust manifold gasket #5965 has anyone had any experiences with this gasket good or bad? Its all i could find for now. Gotta be better then the ones hooker sent me i figure. Thats it for now thanx for the advice guys.

You can get rid of that alternator bracket.

As far as the EGR block off plates, just put them in where the EGR tube fits the header, if you even have the fittings on them, and the other one goes on the back of the intake manifold.

I have hooker coated long tubes, no emissions fittings. So i just have the one spot on the back of the manifold to cover. Im guessing the EGR hole in the back drivers side?? Sounds simple enough.

Its back tward the passenger side. Where ever you took the tube off from. You can throw that other plate away since you dont have the fitting on the header.

HUmm so im not blaocking off the EGR? I thought thats what would come off and get blocked. Hummm whats on the passenger side back of the manifold then?? I dont have a blockoff plate yet, im gonna make one if i cant find one. What would happen if i left that open? Big vacuum leak or what?

Re: Installing headers got a Q

when you get the plates there should be two. one for the fitting on the header passenger side header, one for the back of the intake manifold.

You dont have the egr fitting on the header so you dont need that one. the other plate goes on the back of the intake manifold. Just pay attention when you take the tube off. Bolt the block off plate in place of where the tube comes off.

Re: Installing headers got a Q

I took both of the black altenator brackets off when I did headers. It is just being held by the two bolts.

As far as the EGR block off, when I got my Jet Hot longtubes, it had nothing for me to block off the egr so I cut the plate off the egr pipe and welded the hole up, then bolted that to the intake.

Re: Installing headers got a Q

you should use at least 1 of the alt brackets that is on the back of the alt, ive seen the main aluminum bracket crack from vibration without the rear brackets

Good advice because even though mine have been gone for 3yrs and I routinely spin to 7000rpms, GM did put them there for a reason, I've just been lucky so far I guess.

Re: Installing headers got a Q

OK did some searching and reading and seems i can take a old mountain dew can (have many from this project) and snip out a lil part of the can and either put it between the EGR valve and intake, or i guess the corrugated tube comes off the EGR and i can put a lil plate in there? Im assuming i can cut the curragated tube off then so it doesnt look as funky back there

Re: Installing headers got a Q

Ok, been a while since I did this, but if I remember correctly, you need to block off the part on the manifold where the egr tube bolts on, and also, (not necessary, but helps) you can take off the actual egr valve and block off that. Just make sure to cap the vacume line that runs to it. Doing this will set a code after a while, but won't affect performance at all. The valve can be left on the maniflod and won't function, but it looks better if you just pull it all off.
