I'm about to install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (and gauge) on my Dad's '96 Z28.

What's involved in this installation? What's a good baseline fuel pressure setting for a car that's stock except a cold air kit and an aftermarket Y-pipe and cat-back exhaust?

The AFPR should come with instructions. Adjusting the FP on an OBD11 doesn't do much good since the PCM will adjust the injector pluse to compensate for any leaning out done with AFPR. At any rate, I don't know why anyone would want to install a gauge, but it won't hurt anything.

The regulator is positioned such that some installers remove the fuel lines for the installation.

The factory setting for FP is between 43-46 at WOT (as checked with the vacuum hose disconnected at the regulator). With the hose "on" it should read about 8 less.

To enjoy the benefits of a leaner than stock mixture, you really need to have a tune. JMHO

 

No need for AFPR on his car as it won't provide any benefit; the money could be used elsewhere to improve preformance. As far as the gauge is concerned, you'll use the Schrader valve on the back of the fuel rail to connect to the fuel pressure transducer. You'll need a 90 degree adapter and you need to remove the valve (like a tire valve) from the center of the schrader valve.
